An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Department of Medicine for Older People team on Ward 5B
5B is a 36 bedded Medicine for Older People ward based on level 5 at Whiston Hospital. Specialising in dementia and end of life care. Working as part of the multi-disciplinary team to assess, implement and evaluate care needs for patients on an acute medical ward.
There will be opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills working closely with an experienced and highly skilled multi-disciplinary team. The post holder must be flexible, as you will be expected to work flexible shifts days & nights. An Enhanced DBS Certificate with both the Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists is required for this post.
Main duties of the job
* Provides clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and support staff, may ensure effective running of ward/department in the absence of Department Ward Manager.
* To provide advice and support for colleagues to plan, monitor, implement and evaluate skilled and appropriate care for patients and ensure the provision of evidence-based practice.
* To work within the NMC Code and professional nursing guidance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Provide leadership, management and team development as delegated by the Department/Ward Manager, allocating workloads.
* Contribute to setting goals and benchmarking standards of care. Develop tools to improve the quality of the service and co-ordinate clinical services across the ward.
* Coordinate and manage patient flow within the unit including timely admission and discharge, ensuring national targets are met where possible.
* Promote the unit and the Trust to patients, relatives and the local population.
* Have knowledge of relevant national and local health policies and their impact on the service.
* Inform/escalate to Department/Ward Manager / Matron if care standards or patient safety are compromised and develop appropriate actions.
* Assist and/or lead in the development/implementation of local and trust policies and protocols relevant to the specialty, ensuring effective implementation locally.
* Manage stock and equipment levels and promote economical use of resources.
* Attend corporate groups as a representative of the directorate and team, and represent the clinical area on working groups and at relevant conferences.
* Promote effective communication with all MDT members and other wards and departments in the Trust and externally.
* Participate in business planning to identify service development areas and improvements.
* In the absence or as delegated, initiate and coordinate investigations of incidents, accidents or complaints involving staff, patients and visitors and lead investigations where required.
Clinical Management
* Provide senior nursing advice and support to facilitate high quality, individualized care in collaboration with the MDT.
* Manage and coordinate complex clinical situations, taking appropriate action in emergencies.
* Be clinically competent and confident in the use of specialised equipment across varied settings.
* Act as a clinical role model and leader for staff, ensuring daily unit management and high standards of nursing care.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care with emphasis on evidence-based practice and holistic care including physiological, psychological, spiritual, socio-economic and cultural aspects.
* Contribute to setting and monitoring standards of nursing care and liaise with medical staff and other disciplines.
* Ensure care is delivered within the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Professional Conduct and promote patient and relative involvement in care management.
* Maintain safe custody of drugs and ensure appropriate checking, witnessing and administration procedures.
* Undertake training to expand clinical skills and maintain safe staffing levels during shifts.
* Identify clinical risks and act according to Trust risk management policy.
* Ensure nurse documentation meets Trust standards.
People Management
* Assess and develop action plans to meet individual development needs.
* Participate in orientation for new nursing staff and monitor performance, including appraisals and revalidation support.
* Encourage and motivate staff for personal and professional development; deploy and utilise staffing resources effectively.
* Support team members and refer to appropriate services; assist in recruitment and induction of new staff.
* Ensure staffing levels and skill mix reflect workload and patient needs; coordinate off-duty, annual leave and sickness absence.
Leadership Development
* Promote a learning-friendly environment and participate in staff education, orientation and supervision; mentor and support learners and the nursing team.
* Develop and maintain a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors.
* Assess learning needs and support specialty-based teaching; ensure personal development and revalidation.
* Provide CPD for a group of staff; supervise junior staff and support sharing of best practice within the ward and Trust.
Budget responsibilities
* Ensure effective use of resources, stock management and maintenance of equipment.
* Handle patients’ valuables securely; authorise timesheets for temporary staff as appropriate.
Research And Audit
* Develop and implement audits of nursing practice; promote awareness of current nursing research and apply findings to practice where relevant.
* Disseminate research findings and identify areas for local audit, collecting and analysing data to improve patient care.
* Participate in data collection for audits and research as required.
Personal Development
* Responsible for own continuing professional development and identifying development needs within the Trust review process.
* Identify personal development areas and training requirements; maintain a professional portfolio and revalidation records.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse Diploma / degree level or equivalent experience
* Current NMC Registration
* Evidence of continuous professional development
* Leadership training or qualification (minimum Level 3 ILM or equivalent) or working towards
Knowledge and Experience
* Knowledge of NMC standards for practice contained in the Code
* Experience of leading a clinical team; evidence-based practice
* Experience of clinical risk assessment and risk management
* Understanding of Clinical governance; knowledge of audit procedures
Skills
* Up-to-date clinical skills to ensure ward quality of care
* Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills; ability to lead and coordinate
* Ability to act as a change agent and liaise with MDT members
* Computer literacy, including electronic patient records
