Offer description

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board wishes to appoint a Specialty Doctor in Histopathology to join the current team of thirteen general Histopathologists.

This post will help to support the service during a sustained recruitment drive to develop a team of 16 Consultant Histo/Cytopathologists, following the consolidation of the three previously separate DGH Cellular Pathology departments into a single functional unit of the Pathology Clinical Programme Group. The post will be fixed term for a period of 12 months in the first instance, but may be extended for a further 12 months subject to service need and Executive approval. The successful applicant will contribute to the provision of a routine comprehensive Diagnostic Histopathology Service to the Health Board and will be principally based at Glan Clwyd Hospital. This is a full time (10 sessions) post. The working week will be a standard 7.5 hour working day Monday to Friday. Some flexibility will be permitted subject to agreement with the Clinical Director.

The successful candidates will undertake a range of duties under the supervision and direction of the Consultant Pathologists - these will include the dissection and reporting of major surgical resection specimens, including cancer specimens, with the report being issued with a Consultant. Duties will also include attending relevant multi-disciplinary team meetings, and reporting a range of surgical biopsy specimens with appropriate Consultant supervision. A named Consultant will be ultimately responsible for all reports issued. There is no mandatory requirement to participate in cytology.

A new, purpose-built laboratory (with full consultant reporting / MDT and mortuary facilities) opened at the Ysbyty Glan Clwyd site (Bodelwyddan) in August 2013. Satellite sites, with specimen reception, consultant / secretarial accommodation and full reporting / MDT and mortuary facilities remain in place at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Wrexham Maelor. We have AI technology that supports the reporting of prostate biopsies and breast biopsies and a new x120 rapid tissue processor.

This is an exciting opportunity to offer support to committed staff and colleagues with the encouragement of the Health Board. North Wales is one of the most beautiful and pleasant areas of the United Kingdom in which to work and live with particular appeal to those who enjoy an active or outdoor lifestyle. The main base is well placed close to Junction 25 of the A55. North Wales offers a myriad of opportunities for outside leisure whether that be sailing from Deganwy, climbing and walking in Snowdonia or Mountain biking in Llandegla. It is an excellent place to bring a young family; talk to us if your partner is a Health Professional as well so we can consider how we might support their career. We work closely with the other tertiary centres in Cardiff, Liverpool and Manchester and have links close link with Bangor University.
