SRG is seeking a temporary Institute Manager for a university based in London.
The Institute Manager collaborates closely with the Institute Director to fulfill responsibilities and maintains strong working relationships with the Faculty of Brain Sciences Operations Director and other Central Professional Services departments.
The Institute Manager oversees the smooth operation of all support services, including finance, IT, HR, biological and histology services, health & safety, and facilities management, collectively known as Professional Services.
Duties and Responsibilities
The main functions of this role include:
* Leading the professional services, technical, and administrative functions to ensure efficient, responsive, and professional support that promotes excellence in research, education, and enterprise.
* Managing the Institute's budget within set frameworks, optimizing resource use, and providing financial oversight.
* Supporting the Institute Director in implementing scientific and operational strategies, monitoring the Institute's performance.
* Coordinating with business partners and service leads to meet the needs of the Institute at various organizational levels.
* Ensuring compliance with statutory regulations and internal policies.
Operational Management and Services
* Providing leadership to the Institute’s professional and technical teams, including workload and training management.
* Ensuring high-quality operational services across all sites.
* Maintaining effective relationships with service divisions and overseeing resource management, including finances, staffing, and facilities.
* Establishing governance structures and monitoring performance and progress.
* Reviewing and improving policies and procedures regularly.
* Promoting internal communication and staff engagement.
* Overseeing Biological Services Facility operations and managing estate projects.
Strategic Development and Planning
* Advising on strategic objectives and supporting the development and implementation of the Institute’s strategy and policies.
* Participating in planning cycles, preparing budgets, and overseeing financial and operational reporting.
Finance and Resource Management
* Ensuring compliance with policies, supporting research funding management, and overseeing financial systems and grant applications.
* Managing budgets aligned with strategic plans and liaising with funders and partners.
Human Resources and Staff Management
* Providing HR support, managing staff development, and ensuring effective HR procedures.
* Supporting diversity and equality initiatives and conducting HR investigations as needed.
Experience and Qualifications
* Proven senior management experience in higher education or similar environment.
* Strong leadership in administration, support services, and budget management.
* Experience with research funding, governance, and employment law.
* Educational background to degree level, preferably with a PhD in a scientific discipline.
* Skills in project management, change management, and stakeholder engagement.
