Role Overview
Lead Pharmacist – General Medicine (Band 8a, 1.0 WTE) – based at Barnsley Hospital. This role leads the high‑quality, cost‑effective, patient‑centred Clinical Pharmacy Service on General Medical Wards.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the clinical pharmacy service to improve the quality of care on general medical wards.
* Work with the multidisciplinary team to advise on drug management and promote evidence‑based, cost‑effective prescribing.
* Apply electronic prescribing & medicines administration (EPMA) and quality‑improvement (QI) methodology to optimise all aspects of the pharmacy service.
* Provide leadership, line‑management and operational support for the pharmacy team.
* Support the remote on‑call service, working nights, weekends and bank holidays on a rota basis.
* Champion innovation and continuously seek ways to improve processes.
Qualifications
* Post‑graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent).
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhc).
* Opportunities to study for a post‑graduate prescribing qualification if not already held.
Desired Skills & Experience
* Computer literate.
* Vocational masters degree in pharmacy.
* Post‑graduate qualification to diploma level relevant to the post.
* Junior (supervisory) management training.
* Independent prescribing qualification.
* Negotiating and influencing skills.
* Experience in clinical governance, medicines management, risk management and health & safety.
* Ability to dispense accurately and to check the work of others.
* Excellent communication skills – verbal and written – with patients, medical, nursing and other staff, as well as primary‑care, industry and other agencies.
* Ability to prepare and implement policy, procedure and guideline documents.
* Experience delivering specialist training to pharmacy, medical and nursing staff.
* Ability to identify and report clinical risks, analyse drug usage and expenditure data, and recommend actions.
* Strong planning, prioritising and workload organisation skills.
Experience
* Extensive post‑qualification experience in hospital pharmacy service delivery, including dispensary services, clinical pharmacy and medicines information.
* Continuing Professional Development meeting GPhc mandatory requirements.
* Previous pharmacy teaching experience (desirable).
* Previous experience in staff management (desirable).
