South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust seeks applications for a friendly team player for a Trust Grade Doctor Post at CT3/ST3+ level or equivalent. You will participate in the provision of service primarily based in Intensive Care on the South Tyneside Hospital site. Whilst primary duties will be in Intensive Care, there may be opportunities to practice in Anaesthesia.

You may also need to provide medical care for patients receiving Level 3 care being transferred between Trust sites and tertiary centres.

Main duties of the job

This Post will allow you to further develop your clinical skills and experience in a supportive and dynamic department with a track record for excellence in training. As a Trust doctor you will be entitled to study leave. Clinical and educational supervision will be provided, with opportunities for development in leadership and management, quality improvement and medical education.

The Post is based in South Tyneside though you must be willing to work across both acute sites within the Trust. The out-of-hours resident duties of this Post will primarily be based at the six-bed Intensive Care Unit at South Tyneside Hospital on a 1:9 rota. Some activity may possibly be delivered in the 16-bed Intensive Care Unit in Sunderland. Sessions in Anaesthesia may also be available.

You will work in a team of residents from the Northern School of Anaesthesia & ICM, Specialty and Trust Grade doctors and consultant intensivists.

You must be fully-registered with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice, and have significant demonstrable experience in intensive care and anaesthesia within the NHS. Applications from clinicians unable to work full-time will also be considered.

Job responsibilities

Primarily to provide Critical Care cover during daytime and overnight. With opportunity, subject to service provision, to provide Anaesthetic cover for elective theatre lists.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to, practise from the GMC.
  • Eligible to work in the UK.
  • Significant demonstrable experience in intensive care medicine and anaesthesia within the NHS.
  • Primary FRCA or equivalent.
  • Current employment in a UK Core Anaesthetics / ACCS Anaesthetics Training Programme and have completion of a stage 1 Certificate (2021 curriculum) by the Post start date OR current employment in a UK Anaesthetic Higher Specialty training programme (2021 curriculum) at ST3, ST4 or ST5 level OR completed equivalence Certificate for Stage 1 (2021 RCoA curriculum) OR successful completion of a UK ACCS or core anaesthetics training programme.
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as assessed by the General Medical Council.
  • Applicants must meet professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice).
  • ALS, ATLS, APLS.
  • Higher Degrees including MSc, PhD or MD.
  • Postgraduate qualifications achieved in other specialties.

Special Requirements

  • Flexibility to respond to changing service needs.
  • Ability to commence employment by 14 September 2026.

Experience

  • Must be able to provide complete details of their employment history.
  • Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances.
  • Present level of achievement and performance is commensurate with the totality of their period of training.
  • Sound clinical knowledge judgement with the ability to apply in the workplace.
  • Experience managing patients with severe acute medical disease.
  • Documented competence through continuous work-based assessments and other portfolio evidence.
  • Able to undertake the following with distant supervision (evidence may be requested): Central venous and arterial cannulation, induction of anaesthesia for the critically‑ill patient with cardiorespiratory instability or raised intracranial pressure, transfer of the ventilated patient.
  • Ability to undertake indirectly supervised lists and emergency care of ASA 1 and 2 patients for minor and intermediate surgical procedures.
  • Is able to demonstrate an understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
  • Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
  • Understands the importance of audit and QIP (quality improvement projects) to the practice of intensive care medicine and anaesthesia.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice.
  • Evidence of teaching experience and / or training in teaching.
  • Experience in a complementary specialty.
  • Additional clinical competence to that expected by the training Programme.
  • Evidence of involvement in management commensurate with experience.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of NHS management and resources.
  • Demonstrates information technology skills.
  • Evidence of clinical governance activity such as presentation at a clinical governance meeting, involvement with incident reporting, dealing with complaints.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of research methodology.
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements and involvement in a formal research project.
  • Evidence of relevant academic publications.
  • Evidence of a portfolio of audit projects including where the audit loop has been closed and there is evidence of learning of the principles of change management.

  • Demonstrates probity (as outlined by the GMC).
