Locum Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine
This is a fixed term post for up to 9 months to cover maternity leave. The post will develop and improve the stroke services in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.
Currently stroke services are provided at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital with two wards dedicated to acute stroke admissions (ASU) and step‑down rehabilitation, and further provision for rehabilitation beds in the community. A full stroke MDT works closely together for the best of their patients, including an Early Supported Discharge team, community neurorehabilitation and video fluoroscopy. The ASU offers a 24/7 stroke‑consultant‑led thrombolysis service, access to thrombectomy via the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff and Southmead Hospital in Bristol, daily TIA clinics, neuroradiology meetings, and MDT teaching. The ASU is staffed by foundation doctors, CMTs, grade doctors, COTE / Acute Medicine Specialist Trainees, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will provide a stroke medicine service for patients within Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB. Responsibilities include prevention, diagnosis and treatment of stroke illness, leadership within the field of Stroke Medicine, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to deliver specialist care. The post holder will rotate with other stroke consultants to provide care for the ASU, TIA clinics (four new patients per clinic), review of stroke patients at the front door in ED, and outpatient clinics (two new patients and six follow‑ups per clinic). The post holder will also support community nurses and the Early Supported Discharge team to ensure holistic, integrated working between primary and secondary care.
The post holder will participate in the UHB risk management process, clinical audit, and other clinical governance activities, and be encouraged to engage in research and development aligned with UHB and NHS priorities. The post holder will also participate in job appraisal and review, be committed to the revalidation process, and formulate a personal development plan in conjunction with the Clinical Director to identify training and development needs. Participation in the stroke thrombolysis rota will be required, and IT equipment will be provided to review CT images from home.
Traveling between hospitals and clinics will be required to undertake such duties.
