SEN Support Assistant – Durham and Surrounding Areas
Milk Education is more than a supply partner — we’re a community for educators. We are currently recruiting for an SEN Support Assistant / SEN Teaching Assistant to work across primary schools in Durham, starting immediately on a term-time basis.
We partner with a range of welcoming and inclusive primary schools across Durham who are committed to supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEND). These settings focus on creating safe, nurturing and structured environments where every child is supported to succeed academically, socially and emotionally.
This role offers flexible opportunities across a variety of school settings, supporting pupils with SEND and making a real impact on their learning journey. It is ideal for someone looking for SEN support work, classroom experience, or long-term Teaching Assistant placements across multiple schools.
SEN Support Assistant Responsibilities
Supporting pupils with SEND on a 1:1 and small group basis
Working alongside class teachers to adapt learning activities and resources
Supporting children with autism (ASD), ADHD, speech and language and additional learning needs
Encouraging engagement, confidence and positive behaviour
Supporting behaviour management in line with school policies
Helping to create a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment
Delivering intervention support in literacy, numeracy and phonics
Building positive relationships with pupils and staff
Monitoring and reporting on pupil progress, behaviour and wellbeing
Following safeguarding procedures and Keeping Children Safe in Education guidelines
SEN Support Assistant Requirements
Experience supporting children or young people with SEND (school, care or support setting)
Calm, patient, consistent and nurturing approach
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Flexible, resilient and proactive attitude
Passion for supporting children with additional needs
Understanding of safeguarding in education settings
