JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Classroom Assistant – Special Educational Needs

REPORTS TO: The Principal, through the class teacher

JOB PURPOSE

Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and the care of pupils with special educational needs who are in the teacher’s care in or outside the classroom.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The specific duties of the post will be determined by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.

SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT

* Assist the teacher with the support and care of pupils with special educational needs, e.g., enabling access to the curriculum, attending to personal needs including dietary, feeding, toileting, etc.
* Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils to be supported.
* Assist with authorised programmes (e.g., Education Plan, Care Plan), participate in their evaluation, and encourage pupil participation.
* Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under the teacher’s guidance.
* Assist with operational difficulties and non-invasive medical/clinical difficulties related to pupils’ disabilities.
* Support the implementation of behavioural management programmes as directed.
* Assist pupils in moving around the school and on/off transport.

GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT

* Assist pupils in learning effectively in group and individual settings by managing the learning environment, including:
* Clarifying and explaining instructions
* Ensuring the use of equipment and materials
* Motivating and encouraging pupils
* Reinforcing learning areas
* Promoting independence
* Helping pupils stay on task
* Meeting physical/medical needs while encouraging independence
* Maintain confidentiality and adhere to school policies and procedures.
* Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
* Prepare resources and materials for activities and play sessions.
* Supervise pupils during activities, including extracurriculars and off-site events, following risk assessments.
* Provide continuity of care, supervise play, cloakrooms, and assist with toileting and hygiene.
* Administer prescribed medicines and deal with minor injuries.
* Create a safe environment and report any concerns to the teacher.

ADMINISTRATION

* Assist with classroom administration and record-keeping.
* Support the implementation of systems to track pupils’ progress.
* Provide feedback to teachers and assist with resource management.

OTHER DUTIES

* Attend training sessions.
* Assist work placement students.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority within the post’s level.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications and Experience

Hold either:

* (a) Level 2 qualification in a relevant area plus 6 weeks experience, or
* (b) 12 months’ experience in a formal learning environment.

SECTION 2 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Additional qualifications and experience, such as training in social, emotional, behavioural difficulties, language, communication, ASD/ADHD, or related areas, and experience working with children with special needs.
