Remote/hybrid working is not available for this role, with some flexibility on start and finish times.
The Role
As a Vehicle Installation Technician, you’ll work with a wide range of operational vehicles, fitting them with state-of-the-art technology. Far from your usual automotive role, this isn’t about fixing engines or running diagnostics. You’ll safely and securely install specialist equipment that supports vital surveillance work.
You’ll have opportunities to improve how the team operates, including testing electrical systems and refining build standards. You’ll contribute to design, fabrication, planning and installation at every stage, and communicate clearly with customers to understand needs and areas for improvement. Based in a workshop within a close-knit team, you’ll enjoy a friendly and collaborative environment, with support from the wider department. There is some flexibility around start and finish times.
Responsibilities
* Install specialist vehicle equipment safely and securely for operational use.
* Test electrical systems and contribute to refining build standards.
* Contribute to design, fabrication, planning and installation at all stages of projects.
* Communicate with customers to understand needs, working methods, and potential improvements.
About You
An adaptable and effective problem-solver. Whether you’ve worked on cars, trains, or even rollercoasters, your background in engineering, electrical systems, or vehicle mechanics has given you an understanding of how things work. You should be able to read and understand wiring and circuitry diagrams.
* City & Guilds qualification in engineering, electrical systems, or vehicle mechanical systems, or equivalent experience.
* Ongoing development mindset with engagement in Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
* Full UK driving licence; ability to pass driving and medical assessments.
* Readiness to work in hands-on environments, with some lifting of equipment; training and PPE provided; comfort with working in this setting.
* Effective communication and collaboration, plus ability to work independently and continuously grow in a dynamic team.
Training and Development
Induction will be tailored to your experience and may include shadowing technicians, learning systems and processes, and getting up to speed with health and safety, policies, and teamwork. You’ll gain hands-on experience with vehicle installations and, for those interested in design, opportunities to help develop products used across the fleet. You’ll also gain exposure to other teams, including Research and Design, to understand how everything connects. As you progress, you’ll develop skills in electrics, fabrication, installation and related areas, along with engineering compliance, project work, stakeholder communication and vehicle-based training as necessary. Where needed, we’ll support you in gaining qualifications in electrical installation, welding, or further engineering training.
