Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as an Emerging Talent Trainee Placement - Carbon and Sustainability Project Assistant.
This is a full-time 8 week paid Emerging Talent Programme placement. You will be paid a £454 per week bursary. You will be based in the Newcastle office, with the potential to work from home for some of the placement if desired.
Our training placements are for young people aged 18 to 30 years old across three audiences:
Black, Asian, or ethnic minorities
Disabled people
People who are disadvantaged by their social and/or economic background or circumstances
Purpose of the Placement
The placement will support Historic England’s efforts to achieve net zero by 2040. We are looking for an individual to support our carbon emissions data collection as we implement our Carbon Reduction Plan.
You will support the Carbon and Sustainability Team as they continue to improve data collection processes for carbon and sustainability reporting, for both internal and external stakeholders. You will have good attention to detail and be keen to use this as you learn more about our efforts to tackle climate change by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. The successful applicant will be trained to calculate and interpret Historic England’s organisational carbon footprint and to understand and support public body reporting sustainable requirements.
The placement will be based at Bessie Surtees House in Newcastle, a grade I listed former Jacobean merchant’s house, and successful applicant will also be given the opportunity to explore the wider work of Historic England within the Northeast Region. They will also be introduced to Historic England’s internal inclusion work and will be supported to participate where possible in related opportunities.
What you will be doing
The successful applicant’s primary role will be to support on-going work to improve Historic England’s carbon and sustainability data collection and reporting as part of the Historic England to Net Zero programme:
Liaise with colleagues across the organisation to understand the nature of the data we collect and for what purpose, identifying ways to streamline the collection of data with multiple uses by different teams and avoid duplication of work
Liaise with external contacts within the sector to identify challenges, solutions and share best practice
Support on-going work to automate data collection and reporting
Prepare key findings for the Net Zero Oversight Board and present target progress and trajectories to members
Get involved with the Historic England to Net Zero Champions, providing data and insights where appropriate.
Organisation of the files, documents and resources to reduce digital congestion
Events and meetings
We will be hosting a Welcome Event for all Emerging Talent Placements in our London office on 24 July 2025.
You will attend: weekly Team online check-ins; online Historic England to Net Zero Champions monthly meetings; online fortnightly data automation catch-ups.
You will attend other meetings which may occur during the placement: online Historic England to Net Zero Oversight meetings to present updates from the Carbon and Sustainability Team’s work and understand wider progress; and any quarterly either online or in person wider team meetings occurring during the placement,
You will also have the option to attend events associated with office contact days including office social events such as “bring and share lunches”, and “walk and talks”. TBC any relevant conferences or network events during the placement

Why complete a placement with Historic England
Our placements will enable you to gain valuable hands-on experience of working in the heritage sector, developing skills to enable you to take the next steps in your career.
Once you have completed your Emerging Talent Placement you will be eligible to apply for a 6 month Step-Up placement. These are paid training roles, based within a team for six months full time (part time will be considered). They are specifically targeted for people who have undertaken one of our Emerging Talent Placements over the summer, either this year, or in a previous year.
These placements are designed to give you that “step up” into a longer paid work in the heritage sector.
They will also help you develop your essential skills, improving your employability.
