Hours: 20-24 hours per week, day shifts, waking night shifts and respite.
Rate of Pay: £16.00 per hour
Area: Newcastle upon Tyne
Driver experienced in driving large wheelchair adapted vehicles is essential.
Role Purpose
The purpose of this role is to support a 27‑year‑old son who is upbeat, sociable and has complex health needs. He enjoys interaction, watching people, going to the cinema and the beach. He has a mischievous sense of humour and likes to tease people in a playful way. He loves sensory and musical toys and enjoys company.
The son communicates primarily by pointing and with his eyes, and also vocalises. It is important that the Personal Assistant learns his communication methods and respects his privacy and confidentiality. The son must not be exposed to shouting or raised voices and, if providing overnight support, should be careful not to startle him in his room.
Responsibilities
Provide personal assistance, including hoisting, pushing and bending as required.
Support the son at home overnight without supervision.
Perform procedures such as feeding via TPN once trained, following all safety procedures.
Maintain the son’s wellbeing by monitoring his health conditions including epilepsy, learning disability, free‑draining PEG, supra‑pubic catheter, temperature regulation, and lack of independent mobility.
Travel to and from the son’s home using a wheelchair‑adapted vehicle.
Qualifications and Requirements
Reliable, able to use initiative, work outside normal 9‑to‑5 hours, and respect privacy and confidentiality.
No prior experience required for physical assistance skills; willingness to learn is necessary.
Must have experience driving large wheelchair‑adapted vehicles.
At the time of starting employment, must have permission to work in the U.K.
