Job Description

Be the steady hand behind life’s biggest moments – support a service that truly matters.

At the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), we’re all in – supporting our residents through some of life’s most important milestones. As an Administrative and Operational Officer, you’ll play a key role in ensuring our Register Office runs smoothly every single day, helping us deliver a service that is caring, efficient and deeply valued by the community.

Working Style

This is a permanent and full-time position (36 hours p/w), so you’ll be based in the Borough for 3 days a week, playing a key role in serving the local community. Whether you’re working on the frontline or behind the scenes, you’ll be part of a dedicated team making a real difference to residents’ lives.

What You’ll Be Doing

From births and weddings to citizenship and bereavement, you’ll help make sure every step of these milestones runs smoothly, with care, dignity and professionalism.

As part of the team at our busy Chelsea Register Office, you’ll be involved in a wide range of responsibilities that keep the service running behind the scenes. Whether you're preparing ceremony rooms for a joyful wedding, answering calls from new parents registering a birth, or supporting someone through a bereavement, your contribution will help shape some of the most meaningful experiences in people’s lives.

You’ll manage daily administrative tasks including responding to emails and letters, triaging enquiries, maintaining accurate records and ensuring all legal documentation is processed correctly and on time. You’ll also play a key role in keeping our reception and ceremony spaces organised, welcoming and ready for the day ahead.

Your work will touch almost every part of the service: reconciling payments, ordering supplies, coordinating certificate requests and preparing for citizenship ceremonies. You’ll also liaise with key partners such as hospitals, funeral directors and coroner’s officers, helping to make sure everything is joined up and handled with care.

What You’ll Bring

You’ll bring excellent customer service skills, alongside warmth, empathy and professionalism. You’ll be comfortable working with people going through emotional times, always handling situations with care, tact and sensitivity.

We’re looking for someone with a strong eye for detail, a proactive mindset and a confident approach to multitasking. You’ll be organised, reliable and good at managing your time – whether you’re working independently or as part of the team.

You’ll also need solid IT skills, experience working with administrative systems and the ability to follow processes accurately. Most importantly, you’ll take pride in supporting others and understand how the smallest tasks can make the biggest difference.

Why join us

At RBKC, we’re all in – investing in our people, our communities and our future. This is a unique opportunity to join a small, hardworking team that’s deeply committed to public service. You'll work in a beautiful, historic setting – Chelsea Old Town Hall – helping residents at key moments in their lives.

We’ll support your development with learning opportunities, on-the-job training and plenty of variety in your day-to-day work. You’ll have the chance to grow your skills, expand your knowledge and be part of a team that truly values your contribution.

Interview details

Interviews for this position will be held week commencing 7 th July in person at Chelsea Old Town Hall.
