As an apprentice with Sotham, you will work alongside experienced staff who will assign you electrical tasks relevant to your studies at college and appropriate to your ability level. You will initially receive guidance and instruction on key installation tasks, gradually building up to completing items of work independently.
Overtime is paid for hours worked over 37.5 hours per week. The hourly rate is reviewed annually upon successful completion of each stage and in line with the BESA National Agreement.
Training course: Installation and Maintenance Electrician (Level 3)
Hours: 40 hours per week, between 7am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
Start date: Monday 1 September 2025
Duration: 4 years

Most of your apprenticeship involves on-the-job learning through hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
* Attend City College Norwich as required to complete your course.
* Attend site 4 days per week assisting with all onsite tasks related to Sotham Engineering’s work.
* Keep work areas clean and tidy.
* Install electrical systems such as distribution boards, containment, cables, accessories, and light fittings.
* Work under the supervision of a qualified electrician or supervisor as part of the electrical team.
* Attend all on-site health and safety briefings.

Installation and Maintenance Electrician (Level 3)
* Maintain safety by following statutory health and safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
* Comply with legislation, environmental regulations, codes of practice, and standards such as BS7671.
* Identify and use appropriate PPE when undertaking electrical work.
* Perform work tidily and safely, restoring work areas after completion.
* Communicate effectively, using industry terminology.
* Apply customer service principles in various environments.
* Understand and apply relevant legislation and standards in electrical work.
* Plan, prepare, and maintain electrical systems and equipment.
* Use mathematical and scientific techniques relevant to electrical work.

* Design, plan, install, inspect, and test electrical systems.
* Diagnose and resolve electrical faults.
* Install and maintain electrical and electronic equipment, including emerging technologies like EV charging points and renewable energy systems.
* Ensure work complies with standards and document all work appropriately.
* Utilise digital learning platforms and communication tools.

Requirements
GCSE in Maths (grade 4/C or above). Please include other relevant qualifications and experience. The apprenticeship may be adjusted accordingly.

Other requirements
Applicants currently sitting GCSEs should include predicted grades. Successful applicants will receive a conditional offer based on meeting minimum entry requirements. Work involves early starts across Norfolk, working in partly built structures in all weather. A full, clean driving license and completion of a Level 1 Electrical course are preferred. Applications should be concise and in the applicant's own words without AI assistance.
