In Glasgow we believe that the early days of your career are amongst the most important and you will be supported to complete the Mental Health Newly Registered Nurse (NRN) induction programme that will lay the foundations for progress on the exciting mental health nursing career ahead.

Overview of Services

As a Mental Health nurse you will work within a multi‑disciplinary team providing recovery‑focused, dignified and person‑centred care. You will support a diverse range of services and specialisms, from community and inpatient settings to prison health care.

Alcohol and Drug Recovery Services (ADRS)

You will be at the forefront of providing recovery‑focused, dignified and person‑centred care to individuals with alcohol dependence and substance misuse. Under the supervision of senior nursing colleagues, you will work alongside people, families and carers to reduce harm, promote recovery and advocate for improved access to health and social care.

Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

In CAMHS you will develop therapeutic relationships with young people and their families, providing specialist support to empower them to manage thoughts and feelings as they navigate recovery. You will play a key role in assessment, planning, direct intervention and sign‑posting for young people at critical times.

Forensic Mental Health Services

As a Forensic Mental Health nurse you will provide care and treatment to vulnerable offenders across community and secure rehabilitation units. You will manage risk, support recovery and work towards safety outcomes in collaboration with senior nursing colleagues.

Mental Health Services

Your role will involve working across community and inpatient settings, developing and delivering person‑centred, recovery‑focused care under the supervision of senior colleagues.

Community Mental Health (Adult/Older People)

You will work as an integral member of the multi‑disciplinary team, delivering compassionate care that upholds NHS GG&C values. You will develop skills in formulation, implementation and evaluation of person‑centred care plans.

Inpatient Mental Health (Adult/Older People)

In this role you will support service users and their families in inpatient wards, helping them progress through recovery. You will develop competence in providing safe, effective, person‑centred nursing care under senior supervision.

Prison Health Care

Providing health care for four prison establishments, you will work with a vulnerable population to deliver evidence‑based, recovery‑focused interventions and improve long‑term outcomes.

Addictions Team

You will assess and manage withdrawal from alcohol and substance misuse, provide opiate replacement therapy, detox, psychosocial support, harm reduction, trauma‑informed care and safety, and support senior colleagues in treating complex co‑morbidities.

Mental Health Team

Your responsibilities include specialist mental health assessment, clinical risk management, structured clinical management, liaison for hospital admissions and monitoring high‑dose antipsychotic treatments.

* Adult Nurses can work in ADRS community posts and PHC (Primary Care and Addictions Teams)
* Learning Disability Nurses can work in ADRS community posts, PHC (Addictions Team), Forensics, CAMHS and Mental Health Inpatient areas

Supporting your new career journey

Throughout your first year in post you will undertake the newly registered nurse programme, including corporate and specialist induction, preceptorship, clinical supervision and the national Flying Start development programme.

As a Band 5 Nurse you will work with highly supportive colleagues and senior nursing staff to enhance your knowledge, skills and career progression.

The Clinical Nurse Education Team will support your development in the clinical area, encouraging progress and professional growth.
