Job Title: Middle Grade Vascular Surgeon
We are seeking to appoint a middle grade vascular surgeon to join our team at the Tertiary Arterial Vascular and Regional Major Trauma Centre located at James Cook University Hospital, part of South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, serving a population of approximately 1.6 million.
The successful candidate will primarily work at James Cook University Hospital, with opportunities to work across various spoke hospitals, including Friarage Hospital, Redcar Primary Care Centre, Darlington Memorial Hospital, and University Hospitals of North Tees and Hartlepool. The role involves collaboration with multiple specialties such as vascular interventional radiology, diabetes, orthopaedics, stroke, and renal medicine.
Our hospital is an accredited major trauma receiving centre, contributing to the UK Trauma, Audit & Research Network (UK TARN), and is recognized for its high survival rates from blunt trauma. The role includes supporting on-call vascular surgery duties, particularly in 'Red Trauma' calls, acting as the senior decision-maker and opening surgeon for catastrophic haemorrhage control within the regional trauma team.
We foster a strong team environment, and the post offers ample opportunities to develop skills in open and endovascular surgery, leadership, research, and audit. The candidate will be expected to participate in educational activities, including leading teaching sessions and journal clubs. There is also the opportunity to pursue a Masters in Surgery, MCh (Vascular and Endovascular Surgery) with Teesside University.
The Vascular Surgery Directorate comprises 7 consultants, 5 Surgical Care Practitioners, 2 Specialty registrars, 2 Foundation Year 1 doctors, and 1 Foundation Year 2 doctor. Our catchment area covers approximately 1 million people across Tees Valley and North Yorkshire, with services provided across five hospitals, including our arterial and Major Trauma Centre at James Cook University Hospital.
Our vascular team performs a wide range of procedures, including EVAR, TEVAR, F-EVAR, B-EVAR, and C-EVAR, with extensive experience in complex endovascular interventions. We also operate a Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) to reduce cancellations and provide outpatient varicose vein treatments regionally.
