Clinical/Pharmacy Technician

An exciting opportunity has arisen to become part of our team of ward-based Clinical Pharmacy Technicians. We have vacancies for Technicians looking for a new challenge to join our Clinical Pharmacy Team working across The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals.

You will initially be appointed as a Band 4 Pharmacy Technician and undertake 5 x Trust Dispensary Based Training Programmes, an in‑house discharge assembling on wards training, Medicines Management Module 1 or equivalent, Medicines Management Module 3 (these will take approximately 6 months to complete) and an Accredited Checking Qualification, if not already held (approximately 12 months). Once all training programmes are complete and evidence has been provided to Human Resources, you will be moved to Band 5 Clinical Pharmacy Technician.

Applicants who already hold relevant qualifications/training or experience mentioned above will progress to the Band 5 pay scale accordingly.

The successful candidates will also be expected to undertake Medicines Management 4 or a higher level diploma as part of their role.

We will also accept applicants due to qualify as Pharmacy Technicians in early 2026.

6 x Posts will be across Freeman Hospital and Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Main duties of the job

* To complete medication histories and help achieve medication reconciliation targets in line with CQC recommendations.
* Counselling patients about their medication within pharmacy and at ward level. The post holder is required to communicate with a diverse range of people who visit pharmacy where there may be barriers to understanding e.g. hearing impaired patients or patients whose first language is not English.
* Communicates with other professional and technical staff within the hospital or community pharmacy, regarding specific patient and operational issues.
* Supports other healthcare professionals, particularly the clinical pharmacists by identifying patients in any care setting who need a clinical medication review for a long term condition, high risk medicine, complex transfer of care or problematic polypharmacy.
* Support and mentor students and junior members of the team.
* Helps identify patients at risk of hospital admission or readmission (in accordance with guidance) and assists with referrals to community pharmacy for follow up post‑discharge.
* Will undertake an accredited technician checking course after completion of other in‑house training schemes if not already held.

Job responsibilities

Band 4

* To practice as a registered Pharmacy Technician.
* To undertake a full range of technical pharmaceutical activities within the dispensary including providing advice to patients and other healthcare staff.
* To support ward‑based services on identified wards at the RVI and FH including the dispensing of discharge prescriptions, completing medication histories and providing patient counselling.

Band 5

* To practice as a registered pharmacy technician.
* To provide a clinical service to identified patients.
* In domiciliary general practice or Trust settings including reducing risk associated with the admission and discharge process.
* To undertake a broad range of technical pharmaceutical activities in the dispensary and wards, including providing advice to patients and other healthcare staff.


Person Specification


Meets All Band 5 Criteria

* S/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services and approved underpinning knowledge e.g. BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians or equivalent GPhC recognised pharmacy technician qualification
* Knowledge and understanding of all technical aspects of pharmacy patient services, supported by practical experience
* In addition, successful completion of an in‑house competency‑based training programme or previous relevant post qualification relevant clinical experience which provides an equivalent level of additional experience.
* Practical experience of working in a relevant clinical pharmacy environment.
* Excellent customer care
* Working knowledge of pharmacy computer systems
* Experience as an assessor/ Educational Supervisor. An Accredited Accuracy Checking Qualification
* BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy Services and Therapeutics
* Practical experience of working as a designated checker
* Familiar with Pharmacy stock control systems (e.g. JAC)
* Knowledge of current COSHH and Health and Safety Legislation
* Working knowledge of Microsoft word, excel, spreadsheets and databases


Meets All Band 4 Criteria

* S/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent
* Registered with GPhC
* Experience of working in a Pharmacy Patient Services environment
* Knowledge and understanding of pharmacy patient services, supported by practical experience gained through training
* Knowledge and understanding of the Law and Ethics relating to the dispensing of medicines
* Evidence of professional CPD
* Excellent customer care
* Ability to maintain a high standard of accuracy in a busy environment
* Ability to use own initiative
* Able to work as part of a team
* Able to work under pressure
* Experience as an assessor/ Educational Supervisor
* Successful completion of a recognised accredited checking technician qualification
* Awareness of Trust policies and procedures relating to dispensary services
* Knowledge of current COSHH and Health and Safety Legislation
* Able to supervise others
