Overview

We’re looking for a Data Scientist to join our growing team and help turn complex data into meaningful insights that inform key decisions in housing, energy efficiency, and sustainability. This is an opportunity to work on high-impact projects that support government departments, local authorities, and other public and private sector partners. You’ll be part of a collaborative, skilled team applying modern data science techniques to address real-world challenges and improve outcomes for people and places. Your role at BRE

The Data Scientist will play a key role in delivering data-driven insights and solutions across housing, energy efficiency, and sustainability projects. Working within a multidisciplinary team, this role supports internal and external stakeholders by applying analytical methods and advanced modelling techniques to real-world challenges.


Key Responsibilities

* Develop and apply statistical and machine learning models to solve business and research problems.
* Clean, transform, and analyse structured and unstructured data using modern data science tools.
* Use SQL and Python to extract, manipulate, and visualise data from various sources.
* Support the enhancement and maintenance of existing data products and tools.
* Produce clear and actionable insights to inform decision-making across teams and partner organisations.
* Collaborate with analysts, data engineers, and product teams to shape the technical direction of projects.
* Communicate findings through visualisations, dashboards, and technical reports.
* Contribute to innovation in the use of data, AI, and advanced analytics within the housing and sustainability domain.


Essential qualifications

* Experience with statistical modelling and machine learning.
* Proficient in at least two of: Python, R, SQL, C++, or Rust.
* Ability to work with and replace legacy SPSS code.
* Knowledge of Bayesian and Frequentist statistical methods.
* Strong data storytelling skills for technical and non-technical audiences.


Desirable qualifications

* Advanced Python skills (e.g. Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn).
* Familiarity with ML algorithms (e.g. regression, classification, K-NN, decision trees).
* Understanding of neural networks (ANN, RNN; potential use of CNN).
* Awareness of AI and LLMs (e.g. LLAMA).
* Exposure to Agile practices (Scrum, Kanban).
* Basic understanding of cloud platforms (preferably Azure).

Work Location Options

Hybrid/ Mostly Remote – This role is primarily home-based, with occasional travel to our head office in Watford for planned meetings.
