Critical Care Clinical Educator

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Critical Care Nurse with a passion for education to promote clinical excellence by providing education, advice and support for nurses and other health professionals within the Integrated Critical Care Units. As a Clinical Educator you will be responsible for the supervision, support and education of junior staff members of the ICU team, ensuring that agreed professional standards are reflected in clinical practice and providing highly specialist expertise and training. You will also assist the Critical Care Manager in the provision of ongoing education and training for practitioners throughout the organisation who work with acutely/critically ill patients. The role requires motivation, flexibility, and significant critical care expertise.


Main Duties

* Develop and deliver ongoing education, training and support for all members of the MDT.
* Identify all opportunities where learning can take place, both formally and informally.
* Undertake a Training Needs Analysis and maintain registers of training, supporting ward and departmental sisters/charge nurses to ensure mandatory training is compliant with Trust standards.
* Act as a champion for professional accountability and standards, ensuring that professional practices are in line with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements and Trust Policy.
* May be required to undertake a Team Lead role and deputise for the Critical Care Manager where appropriate.
* Assist in the coordination, delivery and assessment of HEI‑validated modules within the STSFT, including the Post Graduate Certificate in Adult Critical Care Nursing.
* Continuously drive practice development and improve clinical standards in critical care in line with the Clinical Governance Framework.
* Contribute to corporate training and education, lead practice development initiatives and influence change and development of practice using the most recent evidence base.
* Provide nursing lead as a member of the multidisciplinary team, supervise and manage learners attached to ICCU, and act as Adult Area Educational Lead for HEIs supplying learners.
* Support newly qualified/appointed staff to complete the National Competency Framework for Adult Critical Care Nurses (Steps 1‑3) within 2 years of appointment and maintain personal clinical competence in SLEDD delivery.
* Supervise and manage learners, allocate appropriate Mentors/Preceptors, maintain a database of mentors, and provide pastoral support for learners.
* Ensure a minimum of 50% of registered staff within the units possess the national post‑registration award in critical care nursing (CC3N 2016, GPICS 2015, NHS Adult Critical Care Service Specification 2014).
* Maintain discipline within the clinical area, abide by Trust Disciplinary Procedure Policies, and implement evaluation audits to measure the impact of educational programmes and disseminate the results.


Person Specification


Experience

* Research or audit experience
* Extensive critical care experience, including at a senior level with a broad range of complex and technically challenging skills
* Evidence of an extensive portfolio of clinical experience
* Experience of leading a team
* Evidence of innovation in practice


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse, current NMC registration
* Degree in nursing studies or a relevant clinical degree (UK equivalent)
* Masters level study, or equivalent specialist study/experience
* Mentorship Certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable postgraduate qualification in Critical Care
* Completion of National Critical Care Competencies programme, Steps 1‑3
* Evidence of working towards Step 4 Critical Care Competencies
* Postgraduate certificate or Diploma in Education


Skills and Knowledge

* In‑depth knowledge and skills in critical care delivery
* Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information
* Can work without supervision; competent in the delivery of SLEDD
* Understanding/experience of adult/child safeguarding
* Knowledge and understanding of current relevant NHS policy or project‑specific policy context
* Evidence of developing and leading programmes of education/training
* Ability to work independently and across disciplines as a member of a multidisciplinary team
* Effective organisational and time‑management skills and ability to work to deadlines


Physical Skills

* Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy
* Manual dexterity and up‑to‑date working knowledge of relevant equipment
