Overview

The Imaging Physics & Radiation Protection group within Christie Medical Physics & Engineering (CMPE) seeks an experienced Clinical Scientist with MPE and/or RPA qualifications to join our team of ~30 scientists, technologists and administrators. We provide scientific support to NHS and independent sector clinical radiology departments in the North West of England. You will be the primary radiation protection contact for specified organisations, providing advice to diagnostic and interventional radiology/cardiology departments and dental practitioners, and support for the optimisation of diagnostic and interventional radiology as Medical Physics Expert. The role offers opportunities to develop and deliver RPA/MPE expertise within the CMPE framework and to contribute to clinical research and service development. Suitable applicants without MPE or RPA qualifications will be considered at Band 7; applicants with existing MPE/RPA qualifications typically join at Band 8a depending on experience.


Main duties

A large part of the role is leading on RPA and MPE advice to imaging organisations, ensuring they have the information necessary to comply with IRR17 and IRMER17. You will lead in an area of the group’s work (e.g. fluoroscopy, digital radiography, dental, etc.), providing in-depth expertise, driving strategy and its implementation, including x-ray equipment testing methods. Responsibilities include undertaking critical examinations, commissioning tests and quality control measurements on x-ray equipment to ensure safety and clinical suitability, producing written reports and advice for radiographic, clinical and management teams, and liaising with manufacturers as needed. You will supervise day-to-day management of staff, contribute to service management, and provide teaching as part of the role. A current driving licence and willingness to travel are essential.

Qualifications

* Essential:
o Good honours degree in appropriate physical science
o Higher degree (MSc or equivalent)
o State registered Clinical Scientist
o Recognition as MPE or certificate of competence as RPA (ideally both or expected to gain within reasonable time)
* Desirable:
o Corporate membership of IPEM or other equivalent professional body
o PhD or equivalent research experience
o LPA certification


Experience

* Essential:
o In-depth experience of testing X-ray equipment
o Provision of highly specialist scientific support in diagnostic radiology and radiation protection (to RPA and/or MPE level)
o Demonstration of capability for self-motivated working
* Desirable:
o Identifying, planning and undertaking research or service development work
o MPE experience in radiotherapy imaging
o RPA experience in radiotherapy
o Supervision and management experience


Skills and knowledge

* Essential:
o Good computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
o Clear and articulate communicator with good interpersonal skills
o Scientific report writing, ability to work independently and as part of a team
o Teaching skills; ability to position test tools with precision
o Analytical interpretation of investigations/results; applying health & safety and risk management principles
o Resilience and professionalism in challenging situations
* Desirable:
o Advanced computer applications such as image analysis and processing
o Ability to publish in scientific journals and conferences


Knowledge

* Essential: Expert knowledge of radiological physics and radiation protection and regulatory framework; in-depth knowledge of X-ray equipment
* Desirable: Basic understanding of HR policies and procedures; working knowledge of quality management systems
