Job overview

We are looking for band 6 Staff Nurses to join our Paediatric Critical Care Unit (Sky PCCU), which is fast paced, innovative and dynamic environment.

Evelina Critical Care is one of the largest units in the UK, with a 20 bedded level 3 intensive care unit on Forest floor and a 6 bedded Critical Care unit on Sky floor.

The post is open to child registered nurse's who have successfully completed a University accredited Critical Care course or equivalent and consolidated with 6 months post course experience.

Our specialist staff and services mean we care for children and young people with varying complex conditions, providing specialist services. We are a lead centre for critical care in the south-east region and home of the South Thames Retrieval Service (STRS), a transport service for all critically ill children south of the river Thames.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning andprovision of specialist nursing advice and carries out specialist nursingprocedures.

The post holder will provide clinical supervision to other staff,students and may undertake research, lead clinical audits in own specialistarea. Ensuring the safety and well being of services users, and alwaysworking in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through theadoption of person centered care principles

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical and Patient CareIndependently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilstworking as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised andpersonalised direct patient care.

Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment,planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This includeshistory taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreeddiagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.

Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medicationincluding transfusion of blood and blood products.

Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the speciality. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. RN/RN child (subpart 1 NMC register)
2. Relevant experience in PCCU

Desirable criteria

3. Post registration experience
4. PCCU course/ undertaking PCCU course
5. Advanced Life support Training

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria

6. Ability to practice within the scope of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
7. Understanding of the staff nurse role in PCCU

Desirable criteria

8. Experience of supervision of junior staff
9. Previous post registration experience
10. Knowledge of research and audit

Skills and ability

Essential criteria

11. Able to (attain) skills in the care and safety of the child in the PCCU
12. Able to (attain) skills in managing a deteriorating patient
13. Able to develop time management
14. Able to (learn to) convey complex information about condition of a child effectively in a timely manner
15. Excellent numeracy and literacy skills
16. Excellent verbal communication skills
17. Commitment to professional development (competency based)
18. Able to prioritise and meet deadlines
19. IT skills

Desirable criteria

20. Able to understand the need for evidence-based practice.
21. An understanding of professional accountability and patient advocacy
22. Able to communicate with senior management appropriately

23. Able and willing to work flexible shift patterns, internal rotation to day and night duty and unsocial hours, according to service needs
