About the Backend Engineering Chapter:
The Home Acquisition team is crucial to how we acquire and keep customers. We manage the entire customer journey, from initial quotes and purchases to policy management and renewals. Our digital experimentation continually improves our website and purchase process, boosting customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. We have both front-end and back-end engineers who ensure we offer an excellent user experience.
Your day to day:
* Oversee the design and development lifecycle of medium-sized Home Acquisition backend projects, ensuring they are robust, scalable and fit to deliver our long-term goals.
* Mentor and guide other engineers, sharing your experience to foster their technical growth and elevate the team's effectiveness.
* Pioneer engineering excellence by advocating for and implementing best practices, including robust testing, effective code reviews and high-quality coding standards.
* Manage the resolution of bugs, identifying root causes and taking action to improve system resilience.
* Contribute to technical ownership within the team, helping to discover and shape upcoming initiatives.
* Collaborate closely with your team to deliver value through small, frequently integrated changes using CI/CD practices.
* Contribute to and shape the future of our AWS hosted technology stack, which includes:
* Containerised Java & Kotlin applications.
* Serverless applications using API Gateway and Lambdas.
* Event-driven architecture using SNS/SQS.
* Storage with Postgres, DynamoDB and S3.
* Orchestration with CloudFormation and GitHub Actions.
Who are you:
As a Senior Engineer in the Home Acquisition team, you'll own and evolve our backend systems to ensure they are high-performing, scalable, reliable and maintainable.
* Great at working in a team and building relationships to get things done.
* Excellent at communicating clearly and explaining complex technical ideas simply.
* Highly skilled in Java development.
* Adept at designing and taking ownership of complex, scalable and reliable systems.
* Passionate about mentoring colleagues and helping them grow their skills.
* Experienced in overseeing projects from idea to delivery.
* Proactive in finding ways to improve code, processes and ways of working.
* Skilled at creating simple and effective solutions.
* Experienced with cloud technologies, preferably AWS.
* Familiar with Domain-Driven Design (DDD), event-driven architecture and event sourcing.
* Proven experience building and scaling high-volume transactional systems, ideally in sectors like insurance or retail.
