The Role
The Work Package Engineering Manager (WPEM) is responsible for the technical leadership, coordination, and delivery of defined engineering work packages within a project. The role ensures that engineering scope is fully defined, integrated, delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements, while supporting construction, commissioning, and handover.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Delivery & Assurance
* Own the engineering scope for allocated work packages from concept through detailed compilation, construction support, and handover.
* Ensure engineering deliverables are:
* Fit for purpose
* Constructible
* Compliant with specifications, standards, and legislation
* Ensure design risk is identified, mitigated, and communicated.
Scope, Schedule
* Define and maintain a clear Work Package Scope of Work (SoW).
* Develop and aligned with the project master programme.
* Provide accurate engineering package progress reporting and forecasting.
Interface & Integration Management
* Manage interfaces between:
* Other work packages
* Construction, Temporary Works, Commissioning, and Operations
* Ensure engineering outputs are coordinated to avoid clashes, gaps, or rework.
* Act as the engineering focal point for the work package.
* Provide engineering support during construction, including site visits when required.
* Ensure design intent is reflected in construction activities.
* Support commissioning, testing, and handover activities including:
* O&M manuals
Safety, Quality & Compliance
* Lead engineering contribution to:
* CDM obligations
* Hazard identification and risk assessment
* Ensure work packages support safe construction.
* Promote right-first-time quality and lessons learned.
Stakeholder & Team Management
* Act as a key technical interface with:
* Project Manager
* Construction Manager
* Client and Principal Designer
* Mentor and support junior engineers where applicable.
Skills & Experience
* Degree (or equivalent) in engineering or a related discipline.
Technical
* Strong engineering background in relevant discipline(s).
* Sound understanding of engineering lifecycle and construction delivery.
* Knowledge of industry standards and regulations.
Project & Commercial
* Schedule and progress management.
* Risk management and problem-solving.
Behavioural
* Strong leadership and communication skills.
* Ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
* Decisive, organised, and delivery-focused.
