Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic paediatric trainee – most suitable for ST5 or ST4+ with at least six months experience at tier 2 level – to develop their skills and experience in medical education & educational leadership, focusing on undergraduate paediatric education.
The undergraduate paediatric course (ICU – integrated course unit) is set in Year 4 of the five‑year MBChB programme at the University of Leeds. Approximately 300 students per year are divided into five ICU groups of 60. Each group rotates into paediatrics over a 6‑week period throughout the academic year. The trainee will work alongside academic and clinical teams to support the teaching and assessment of paediatrics and child health.
Role Description
• 3 days a week, daytime paediatric education duties with a full on‑call commitment to general paediatrics or a paediatric speciality on the HST rota. Working on a middle‑grade rota is desirable/beneficial. Placement preferences will be facilitated where possible.
• Fixed‑term role for 12 months, undertaken out of training.
• Applications must be discussed with the educational supervisor and training programme director (TPD).
Main Duties
* Assist in the general running of the course at ICU level and for Leeds students.
* Organise and deliver lectures and seminar teaching, especially in the introductory week.
* Organise and deliver ward‑based clinical teaching.
* Recruit, train, support and enthuse tutors – and take on the lead tutor role where possible.
* Provide pastoral and academic support to students, familiarising with university services (Personal Tutor System, Academic Sub‑Dean, Student Support Team, Counselling Service, Equality and Diversity Service, mitigation system).
Assessment
* Assist with reviewing assessments at the end of each 6‑week block.
* Help prepare written and OSCE examination material in liaison with the Year 4 Assessment Lead, Paediatric Assessment Lead and Paediatric Course Manager.
Additional Roles
* Represent paediatrics on the course management team, supporting assessment and moderation.
* Assist with Year 4 Theme Day teaching (runs three times a year).
* Supervise elective and physician associate students.
* Keep paediatric course materials on the VLE up to date.
About Us
You will work closely with the Paediatric ICU team, including academic and clinical leads, assessment lead and clinical educators. Teaching sessions occur across the University site (Worsley building) and clinical sites at Leeds Children’s Hospital.

Requirements
Clinical, Academic and Personal Skills – Essential
* Apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement, prioritise clinical need.

Experience – Essential
* Eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from the GMC at the intended start date.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Advanced Paediatric Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
* At least 1 year of UK experience, plus 2 years overall.
* Fit to practise safely and aware of own training needs.
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English for effective communication about medical topics.
Qualifications – Essential
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Successful completion of MRCPCH by interview.
Eligibility, Fitness to Practice and Language Skills – Essential
* Full registration with, and licence to practise from the GMC.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) Certificate.
* 1 year UK experience + 2 years overall.
* Fit to practice safely and aware of training needs.
* Proficient English for written and spoken communication.
