This is a standalone, engineering-led role focused on removing cost through better design, smarter manufacturing routes and closer collaboration with suppliers. It will suit an engineer who enjoys getting into the detail of how parts are made and isn’t afraid to challenge designs, specifications and assumptions to improve value. This is not a traditional buyer role and not a pure design position. The role sits between Engineering and Supply Chain and has real autonomy and visibility. The role You’ll take ownership of cost reduction projects across a wide range of engineered and bought-in components, working closely with engineering, manufacturing and suppliers. Key responsibilities include: Identifying cost reduction opportunities across machined parts, fabrications, assemblies and metalwork Challenging designs, tolerances, materials and manufacturing routes to improve value Supporting engineering change activity with a clear cost focus Working directly with suppliers to understand capability, processes and cost drivers Benchmarking, should-cost style analysis and supplier cost challenge Running cost-down projects end-to-end from idea through to implementation Presenting savings opportunities and working collaboratively to drive change What you’ll need This role requires engineering credibility first, with a practical commercial mindset. Backgrounds that tend to work well include: Manufacturing / Production / Industrial Engineering Product Cost / Value Engineering / VAVE NPI or Project Engineering with supplier involvement Tooling or Process Development Engineering Engineering roles with strong exposure to supplier cost and manufacturability You’ll ideally bring: A solid understanding of manufacturing processes and cost drivers Confidence reading drawings and BOMs Real examples of cost reduction through design, process, material or supplier change Supplier-facing experience and the confidence to challenge assumptions A pragmatic, hands-on approach suited to a manufacturing environment Formal engineering qualifications are beneficial but not essential. Practical experience and the confidence to hold technical conversations are more important. Why join?
