JOB TITLE: Housing Debt Recovery Officer

Pay rate: £23.88 per hour (PAYE)
Contract Type: Temporary, Anticipated 2 to 3 months
Working Arrangement: Office based – no hybrid
On behalf of a local council, we are seeking a Housing Debt Recovery Officer to support the effective management and recovery of former tenant arrears and housing‑related debts. This is a key role focused on maximising income and ensuring fair, consistent, and empathetic debt recovery processes.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage a caseload of former tenant and housing debt accounts.
* Review and analyse debt recovery reports to prioritise cases and actions.
* Contact customers via letters, emails, and telephone to establish repayment plans and resolve outstanding balances.
* Conduct debt checks, tenancy checks, and reference searches using internal systems and online tools.
* Use search engines and tracing methods to locate debtors and confirm contact details.
* Dispute and resolve recharge and account discrepancies in liaison with relevant teams.
* Assess customers’ income and expenditure to agree sustainable repayment arrangements.
* Maintain accurate case notes and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and data protection requirements.
What the client is looking for
* Experience in debt recovery, credit control, or income management.
* Previous local authority experience or background in housing, finance, or collections is beneficial.
* Highly organised and able to manage a busy workload independently.
* Empathetic and customer‑focused, able to balance firm recovery with fairness.
* Confident using IT systems and databases for case management and tracing.
* Skilled in written and verbal communication with strong attention to detail.
