Overview
To join a team of existing and new workers to deliver structured programmes of youth work projects and activities that support the personal and social development of children and young people. You will primarily deliver positive youth work with children and young people in youth club, afterschool or detached youth work settings within the localities of the Central and North Areas of Barnsley. This will include routinely working after school and/or evenings, some weekends from 2pm to 8pm. You will need to be able to travel to delivery locations within these areas at these times. You will be required to support the aims and ethos of YMCA Barnsley and the projects, ensuring that the planning, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of activities are responsive to the needs of children, promote positive health and wellbeing and create a welcoming, safe, positive, non-judgemental environment.
We are currently recruiting Youth workers to support YMCA Barnsley’s Unity project which aims to build the emotional resilience and wellbeing of children and young people aged 10-14 years; through delivery of a programme of stimulating and challenging activities that empower children, young people and their communities.
The post is subject to enhanced DBS and Permission to work in the UK checks.
Willingness to work flexibly – after school, evenings, some weekends and school holidays and to attend meetings outside normal working hours. Ability to travel to delivery locations in the Central & North Areas of Barnsley.
Responsibilities
* Deliver a wide range of children’s and youth work activities and support planning, delivery, monitoring and evaluation in line with YMCA Barnsley aims and ethos.
* Engage with young people, parents, schools, communities and other relevant agencies in real partnerships; use flexible methods of delivery; and undertake discussions and project work.
* Work with young people to promote positive health and wellbeing and create a welcoming, safe, non-judgemental environment.
* Deliver Unity project activities to build emotional resilience and wellbeing for ages 10-14.
* Record and articulate young people’s progression and support senior staff in identifying impact on lives.
* Manage reporting and data collection to demonstrate activity outcomes.
* Travel to delivery locations within the specified areas and times.
* Uphold standards and contribute to the strategic development of YMCA Barnsley.
Qualifications / Training
* A good general level of education
* Part time JNC Community and Youth Work qualification (or equivalent)
* Enhanced DBS clearance and Permission to Work in the UK
* Willingness to support the Christian ethos and values of YMCA Barnsley
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
* Up to date knowledge of national and local developments in Children’s and Youth Work
* Ability to develop/encourage individuals to achieve their full potential
* Broad understanding of the range of provision available to children and young people
* Ability to deliver a wide range of children’s and youth work activities
* Ability to challenge young people’s language and behaviour effectively
* Ability to work with individuals and groups of young people
* Good organisational and administration skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and Teams
* Good communication skills, verbal and written
* The ability to quickly establish positive relationships with young people and motivate them to participate in activities and events
* Ability to record and articulate young people’s progression and to support senior staff in identifying impact on young people’s lives
* Experience of working in partnership and consulting with young people
* Able to use appropriate reporting and data collection systems
Experience
* Recent experience of working with children and young people in a youth work/health & wellbeing/educational setting
* Experience of working with children and young people
* Experience of planning, delivery and evaluation of activities
* Experience of working with/in disadvantaged communities and with at risk and vulnerable children and young people
* Experience of planning, delivery and evaluation of activities and projects on issues relating to young people’s health and wellbeing, as well as organisational and local issues of concern
Other
