Join us today to become a Conservator Volunteer and be part of the team keeping history alive by preserving our waterways. In this role, you’ll experience the many faces and locations of our beautiful network and help maintain our structures and assets. Whether it’s working on pre-planned maintenance, such as cutting back vegetation around aqueducts, or tackling graffiti in urban locations, our Conservators ensure there’s plenty of beauty on the doorstep. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in your community and learn more about the canals in your area.
We are seeking volunteers within a five-mile radius of Thurmaston, LE4 8AF. You should have good experience with hand tools and awareness of health and safety. Ideally, we prefer volunteers to commit to one day per week, with flexibility to travel and meet team members locally who have a Trust vehicle. Working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Our main depot is located at:
Waterways Yard
Pingle Lane
Swarkestone
Derbyshire
DE73 7GN
While this is our main depot, we work across various areas in our network.
Why we want you
Our Conservator volunteers help maintain our network by carrying out heritage and nature conservation activities, as well as everyday tasks like painting or litter picking to improve the local environment.
They help address some of the toughest issues on the waterways, ensuring access and maintenance of the canal. Each year, we face new challenges in managing our increasingly popular spaces. Your support will help us keep canals vibrant and accessible.
Some projects are task-specific, such as rebuilding stone walls or planting, allowing volunteers to contribute in different ways according to their interests and availability.
