Legal Manager
Up to £61,425 per year
Option for five-days-in-four condensed week
This is a senior legal leadership role for an experienced Local Authority lawyer who enjoys managing people, advising at a high level and helping services make sound decisions.
You will lead a small in-house legal team delivering advice across a broad range of council activity. The role suits someone who is already supervising or managing lawyers, whether in a contentious or non-contentious setting, and who is open to taking on oversight of Land Charges and Information Governance as part of a wider management brief. You will have overall responsibility for a team of seven, including Senior Legal Officers, Paralegals and specialist officers covering Land Charges and Information Governance. The emphasis here is on legal leadership, judgement and the ability to run a service. Support and development will be available around Information Governance where needed. You will:
1. Lead and develop a compact legal team, setting direction, priorities and standards
2. Provide clear, practical legal advice to senior officers and services across the council
3. Support the Monitoring Officer on governance, risk and decision-making
4. Oversee the delivery of Land Charges and Information Governance functions, with specialist officers in post
5. Manage workloads, budgets and the commissioning of external legal support where appropriate
About you
6. A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX
7. An experienced Local Authority lawyer with a strong public sector background
8. Confident leading and supervising lawyers and legal support staff
9. Comfortable working with senior stakeholders and elected members
10. Open to developing your oversight of Information Governance and Land Charges as part of a broader role
