Job overview
The Clinical Engineering Department provides evaluation and selection, acceptance checks, repair, calibration, and maintenance for a wide range of medical devices and equipment to ensure safe operation with minimal downtime. Equipment includes electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer software and medical gas systems.
Clinical areas include general wards, Intensive Care, Special Care Baby Unit, Theatre modalities, Cardiology, Renal Unit and Equipment Library. The post holder will service, repair, calibrate, perform scheduled preventative maintenance, safety and acceptance testing on a wide range of patient-connected medical equipment, and work to high standards of safety and accountability. Liaisons with clinical and technical staff and manufacturers are part of the role.
Main duties of the job
* Provide technical services for preventative maintenance, servicing, calibration, inspection, and repair to a wide range of complex patient-connected medical equipment, including life support devices.
* Communicate with clinical users to understand problems, assess urgency, and respond appropriately.
* Undertake fault-finding and report unusual faults to manufacturers; diagnose faults in devices with multiple systems; determine causes such as user error, equipment failure or environmental factors.
* Rectify equipment faults and undertake repairs to electrical/electronic and mechanical devices to component level if necessary.

Candidate information and responsibilities
Detailed responsibilities include managing work, planning within departmental/NHS policies, working individually or in a multidisciplinary team, and using information systems to gather data for service improvements. Specific duties include:
* Check equipment performance against manufacturer specifications; carry out calibration, quality control and safety checks.
* Organise and manage planned maintenance schedules; identify hazardous symptoms and faults; liaise with staff to carry out maintenance; advise on equipment specification and evaluation.
* Monitor stocks, report safety notices, and liaise with external agencies as required; maintain accurate records in the equipment management system.
* Provide technical advice to clinical and staff groups; support the Facilities and Estates Division where needed.

Essential criteria
* Achieved correct academic grades or equivalent
* Proven knowledge of medical electronics, electro-mechanical systems, computing, and medical device support
Desirable criteria
* Attendance on training courses for maintenance/repair of a wide range of medical devices
* Foundation Degree in Medical Technologies or equivalent
