PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER
Under the Teachers' (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5, a teacher shall perform general professional duties and any particular duties as reasonably directed by the Principal or by the employing board when not assigned to a single school. The duties include planning, teaching, assessment, pupil welfare, communication with parents and external bodies, staff development, and involvement in school administration and pastoral arrangements.
* 1. Planning
o 1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
o 1.2 Teaching, according to pupils' educational needs, including setting and marking work in school and elsewhere;
o 1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
* 2. General
o 2.1 Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and of any class or group;
o 2.2 Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, further education and careers, including sources of advice and recording/reporting;
o 2.3 Making records of and reports on personal and social needs of pupils (where appropriate);
o 2.4 Communicating with and consulting parents;
o 2.5 Communicating and cooperating with external bodies approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors;
o 2.6 Participating in related meetings.
* 3. Assessment/Reporting
o Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils, as appropriate.
* 4. Staff Development/Professional Development
o 4.1 Participating in staff development and performance review if required;
o 4.2 Reviewing methods of teaching and programmes of work; pursuing further training and professional development;
o 4.3 Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum development, teaching materials, programmes, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
* 5. Discipline/Health and Safety
o 5.1 Maintaining order and safety, in line with authority policies and during school activities;
o 5.2 Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements.
* 6. Public Examinations
o Participating in preparation for public examinations, assessing pupils for examinations, and supervising during examinations.
* 7. Review and Development of Management/Administration
o 7.1 Contributing to staff appointments and development, coordinating or managing work of other teachers, and contributing to curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
o 7.2 Participating in administrative tasks, supervising support staff, equipment and materials, assemblies, attendance and supervision of pupils.
* 8. Number of days/Hours of work
o 8.1 Availability for 195 days per year (not more than 190 classroom teaching days); hours and travel as specified; limitations on weekly teaching hours;
o 8.2 Breaks and nursery provisions; definition of a "year" and a "week" for the contract.
* 9. Staff cover
o Providing cover for absent teachers under defined conditions related to school size and staffing.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
NOTES TO JOB APPLICANTS

SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
The following essential criteria will be assessed at shortlisting and may be explored during interview. Demonstrate on the application form how you meet these criteria.
* Qualifications/ Professional Membership
* Hold a teaching qualification appropriate for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland
* Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach English as the main subject
* Experience
* Minimum of 1 year’s demonstrable experience of teaching English at Key Stage 3 and 4 with positive learning outcomes
* Experience using a range of teaching strategies and digital media/technology to enhance learning
* Other
* Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post
SECTION 2 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
The following essential criteria will be measured during interview/selection.
* Knowledge
* Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection, the SEND Code of Practice, IT systems and digital tools, assessment methods
* Skills / Abilities
* Effective teaching and classroom management, inclusive learning environment, collaborative work with pupils, colleagues, parents and wider community
* Values Orientation / Identification with School Ethos
* Demonstrate alignment with the School’s Values/ethos (information on values available on the school website)
SECTION 3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA
Desirable criteria may be used to determine a manageable pool of candidates. Demonstrate on your application how you meet these criteria.
* Qualifications and Experience
* Minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching English at Key Stage 3 and 4
* Experience using varied classroom approaches to support and challenge all abilities, including those with SEN
* Experience monitoring pupil progress, target setting and intervention
