Overview
An exciting opportunity to work within the Phlebotomy Department. The phlebotomy team provides essential services within the Trust and the wider health care community, delivering care on inpatient wards, outpatient services, clinic settings and at the 1829 Building on the Countess of Chester Hospital site for GP bloods. Off‑site locations include a GP Phlebotomy Hub in Ellesmere Port and ward/outpatient services in Ellesmere Port Hospital. This role covers all listed locations.
Responsibilities
* Provide supervision and staff support for all existing phlebotomy staff and trainees, ensuring a high standard of practice and adherence to correct procedures.
* Deputise for the phlebotomy manager when required, acting as the named contact for the Phlebotomy Service concerning operational issues.
* Support the Phlebotomy manager with rotas, day‑to‑day running of the service and contingency plans.
* Attend meetings and provide departmental reports in the absence of the Phlebotomy Manager.
* Set and maintain high standards of blood collection.
* Ensure patients are comfortable, relaxed, and consent to blood collection.
* Record blood sample collection via electronic methods.
* Report incidents via the Datix system and assist in investigations.
* Undertake venepuncture, cannulation, blood cultures, venesection and train others, assessing competency.
* Perform stock rotation and management.
Person Specification
* Essential – Knowledge and Experience
o Knowledge of Infection Control Policies and procedures
o Computer literacy
o Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively
o Some supervisory experience
* Essential – Skills and Abilities
o Polite, courteous communication and empathetic interaction with patients
o Effective teamwork and communication skills
o Ability to communicate with patients at varying levels of understanding
o Experience in cannulation, blood cultures, venous blood gases and venesection
* Essential – Qualifications
o 5 GCSEs grade C or above (including English and Science) or equivalent
o Substantial phlebotomy experience
o NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience
* Desirable – Knowledge and Experience
o Use of Cerner/EPR
* Desirable – Skills and Abilities
o Experience in staff management
* Desirable – Qualifications
o Accredited training in phlebotomy (e.g. geopace)
o ILM or equivalent management qualification
