Do you want to use your specialist biodiversity, habitats regulations experience and collaboration skills to help us protect and enhance the diverse habitats and wildlife of the Humber Estuary, both now and in the future?

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Humber Strategy Team as a Habitats Advisor. In this role you will lead on Environment Agency statutory habitat and environmental responsibilities associated with implementing the Humber Flood Risk Management Strategy and development of the new Humber 2100+ Strategy. You will lead and deliver partnership projects, as well as advise and collaborate with others to identify and deliver habitat and biodiversity enhancements at our proposed and existing large habitat sites around the Humber, successfully obtaining the appropriate environmental approvals and enabling effective habitat monitoring and management.

A key part of your role will be to develop and nurture strong working relationships with partners and stakeholders across the Humber and beyond. You will share and apply best practice, linking with groups and wider initiatives to identify opportunities, innovative approaches and multiple benefits.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. Everyone that joins us is required to undertake training and participate. This may attract an additional payment and full training will be available. Please see the candidate pack for information on how you will support with this.

The team

The Humber Strategy team is focused on the long-term management of tidal flood risk around the Humber and tidal rivers and includes specialists in flood risk, the environment and coastal habitats, engagement, strategic planning and funding.

We’re involved in a number of exciting Humber projects, including habitat creation projects and development of the new Humber 2100+ Strategy, working closely with colleagues from across the Environment Agency locally and nationally and with many partners and stakeholders.

Experience/skills Required

Essential:


* sound knowledge and experience of biodiversity, water dependent habitats and species and their ecological requirements
* some understanding and experience of estuarine or coastal habitats, geomorphology and processes
* sound experience of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 (known as Habitats Regulations)
* knowledge of wider regulations and environmental legislation, including Water Framework Directive and Countryside and Rights of Way Act
* excellent communication skills and experience of successfully collaborating and building relationships
* experience of managing projects, delivering high quality outcomes to defined deadlines
* be resilient and comfortable in a fast-paced environment, able to work on your own initiative and as part of a dispersed team
* have a passion for equality, diversity, inclusivity


Desirable:

* experience of managed realignment schemes
* experience of planning for future delivery of habitat climate resilience and adaptation


Contact and additional information

We support our staff to do their work in a way that works for them and the team and support flexible working. Although we often work remotely, we would expect the post holder to be based at one of our local offices (Beverley, Leeds, Lincoln, Nottingham, Rotherham, Sheffield, York). You will need to be able to easily access to the Humber area and will be expected to visit our key habitat sites on a fairly regular basis, specifically including Spurn Head.

A full UK driving licence is essential.

As the habitats specialist in the Humber Strategy team you will be planning and delivering work within a European Site (Special Area of Conservation, Special Protection Area), a Protected Area and / or which may affect a Protected Species. You will be responsible for identifying and coordinating required environmental assessments, approvals and consents.

Role specific license requirements

Full UK driving licence
