Job Description

We’re recruiting a fixed‑term role, up to 2 years, for someone with experience working in or regulating energy sectors, including combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries. This role supports the UK's Net Zero strategy by helping to decarbonise the energy sector and ensure emissions are managed.


Responsibilities

* Provide expert technical support and guidance, including training.
* Develop sector strategy and produce tools to support regulation, delivery of environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects as required.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, trade associations and other key industry players.
* Respond to incidents when required and provide business continuity support during events.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be asked to be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.


Team

The Energy & COMAH team is part of the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation of the Environment & Business Directorate. Technical experts lead on defining sector standards, providing strategic direction, guidance, training and environmental best practice.


Experience and Skills Required

* Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage consideration of diversity issues.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge; experience in regulating emissions controls for combustion plants and related facilities.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.

This vacancy closes at the end of October. Interviews will be held in person in Birmingham by the end of November. Some travel may be required. If you consent to be recruited onto a reserve list, we will hold your details for 6 months and may offer an alternative post.


Contract Length

Up to 2 years.


Competence 1: Legislative Knowledge

Apply knowledge of statutory environmental and technical requirements to protect the Environment Agency and the environment. Provide advice on regulatory requirements for combustion plants of different sizes and purposes.


Competence 2: Works in Teams

Work cooperatively with other senior advisors across a wide portfolio of work, both reactive and planned. Ensure priorities and responsibilities are aligned and delivered.


Competence 3: Builds and Sustains Relationships

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including government officials, trade associations and the EA's operational teams.
