20% part-time hours (1 day a week, or 4 days a month according to workload)
SALARY
£30,930 per annum (pro-rata), rising to co-op director salary at the time (currently £32,992) following the successful completion of the 6 month probation period.
JOB SUMMARY
The Accountant is responsible for the overall financial oversight of the New Internationalist Co-operative and its subsidiaries New Internationalist Publications and Myriad Editions. S/he will help co-op colleagues to make informed and prudent decisions and provide input into business decisions, as and when required.
REPORTING
The Accountant is directly responsible to the New Internationalist co-operative and will report on financial matters to the full co-operative as and when required. The Accountant is a member of the Central Services Team. S/he will work alongside the Senior Bookkeeper (who is responsible for all day to day bookkeeping).
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Monitor company expenditure and make recommendations to individuals and teams responsible for budgets
* Maintain statutory company records and lodge statutory returns for all New Internationalist companies
* Produce and present to the co-op quarterly management accounts
* Liaise with the company's auditors
* Produce annual budget and future years rolling estimates, cash flow forecasts and ad-hoc reports as required
* Preparation of quarterly VAT returns and EU sales lists ensuring compliance with VAT regulations
* Being the appointed Treasurer for New Internationalist Co-operative Ltd
* Keep up to date with legislative and regulatory changes
* Any other activities related to the financial management of the Co-operative consistent with the role of a company accountant
* Provide backup for the Senior Bookkeeper
Essential requirements
* A form of accountancy qualification such as ACCA, ASA, AAT, etc.
* Strong accounting background
* Familiarity of FRS102 accounting
* Excellent IT skills, including advanced level Microsoft Excel
* Excellent attention to detail, time management, organisational skills, administration, verbal and written kills
* Candidates must have good budgeting and financial planning skills and the ability to produce financial data in a clear format and to communicate relevant aspects to non-finance staff
* A commitment to the emission, vision and values of the co-operative
Desirable requirements
* Familiar with group consolidated accounts
* Familiar with the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014
* Third sector accountancy experience
* knowledge of accounting in some of New Internationalist's core activities: publishing, e-commerce, fundraising, and contract reporting
