Position Statement
The Laboratory Technical Assistant is trained on the job for specific technical tasks that are supportive of the laboratory testing process. They possess technical skills and experience sufficient to perform clinical laboratory specimen collection, processing, and CLIA waived testing. Works under the supervision of a Medical Technologist and must have all testing reviewed by a Medical Technologist.
Key Responsibilities
* Able to perform all duties of a Laboratory Assistant.
* Perform waived testing and specimen processing under supervision of Medical Technologists while exercising limited professional judgment, deferring issues to a Medical Technologist.
* Order, package, and track specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
* Maintain supply inventory for clinical testing, pathology, and sendout areas.
* Perform manual accessioning, packaging, and billing for pathology specimens.
* Provide clerical support to clinical laboratory and scan reports into EHR.
* Monitor MayoAccess message center, responding to specimen issues and notifying providers and/or patients of canceled tests or short samples.
* Maintain Sensoscientific node and probe hardware, replacing glycol solution and probes annually or as recommended by vendor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Must have a high school education or equivalent.
* Prior clerical experience, phlebotomy experience, medical terminology or EKG experience would be helpful but can be learned on the job.
* Phlebotomy Certification from a nationally recognized agency is highly recommended but can be accomplished after hire.
* Computer entry or word processing skills required.
* Working knowledge of medical terminology desirable.
* Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work well under pressure and handle difficult situations with empathy and professionalism.
