Role Overview
The Joiner Foreman is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of joinery and associated construction activities on site, ensuring work is completed safely, to the required quality, and in line with programme. The role leads direct labour and specialist subcontractors, coordinates materials and plant, maintains site standards, and supports the Site Manager through clear communication, accurate progress reporting, and hands-on leadership-particularly where high-quality finish and heritage detail are required.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise and coordinate day-to-day joinery works on site, including direct labour and specialist subcontractors.
Plan daily activities, allocate tasks, and ensure works are sequenced correctly (e.g., first fix, second fix, finishing) to meet programme milestones.
Set out and oversee installation of timber components including studwork, floors, roofs, doors, windows, skirtings, architraves, and bespoke fittings (as applicable to project scope).
Ensure all work is carried out safely and in compliance with site rules, risk assessments/method statements, and company procedures.
Monitor quality standards, carry out regular checks, and ensure workmanship meets drawings, specifications, and relevant regulations-maintaining high standards of finish.
Coordinate deliveries, materials, tools, and plant; maintain good housekeeping and secure storage, with careful handling of timber and finished components.
Liaise with the Site Manager, client representatives, and other trades to resolve day-to-day issues, manage interfaces, and maintain productivity.
Support inspections and handovers, manage snagging/defects, and ensure remedial joinery works are completed promptly.
Maintain basic site records (labour, progress, materials, variations) and report delays, defects, or additional works.
Coach and mentor operatives and apprentices, promoting a positive site culture, safe working practices, and continuous improvement.
Skills & Attributes
Essential
Proven experience as a joiner/carpenter, with the ability to lead a team and coordinate multiple trades on busy sites.
Strong working knowledge of joinery methods, drawings/specifications, setting out, and quality standards (including high-quality finishing).
Safety-focused approach, with experience implementing RAMS and maintaining safe systems of work.
Good communication skills and confidence liaising with site management, clients, and subcontractors.
Organised, reliable, and able to work to deadlines in a physically demanding, outdoor environment.
Desirable (Not Essential)
SSSTS/SMSTS (or working towards) and a valid CSCS card (Skilled Worker or Supervisor, as applicable).
NVQ/SVQ Level 2/3 in Carpentry & Joinery (or equivalent) and/or a completed apprenticeship.
First aid certification.
Plant/telehandler or lifting equipment tickets and experience coordinating deliveries and lifting operations.
