Director - Facilities Management

Reporting to: Managing Director, Royal Mail Engineering

Location: UK‑wide remit, flexible with regular site travel

Shape the future of Facilities Management across one of the UK’s largest and most complex estates.

Royal Mail plays a vital role in keeping the UK connected. Behind that mission sits an extensive national property estate — and at the centre of its performance is Facilities Management.

We are now seeking a Facilities Management Director to provide strategic and operational leadership for all FM services delivered through Property & Facilities Solutions Ltd (PFSL), a wholly owned Royal Mail subsidiary.

This is a high‑impact leadership role with responsibility for c.2,000 operational sites, 30 million sq. ft. of property, and full P&L accountability, leading an organisation of around 2,000 colleagues across soft services, commercial, contracts, energy, and supplier management, through a senior leadership team of 3 direct reports.

The role

As Facilities Management Director, you will:

* Set the strategic direction and operational plan for all FM services, ensuring safe, compliant, cost‑effective, and high‑quality delivery across the Royal Mail estate
* Lead a significant national operation, balancing uninterrupted business continuity with continuous improvement and transformation
* Own full P&L accountability, delivering year‑on‑year improvements across cost, service, quality, and safety
* Drive the evolution of the FM operating model, including progressing a self‑delivery strategy aligned to Royal Mail’s performance and efficiency goals
* Act as a senior duty holder for building safety, championing a strong health, safety, and compliance culture across all FM activity
* Lead energy management and carbon reduction, including delivery of the energy and CO₂ programme and associated Capex investment
* Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders across Royal Mail Group, Operations, Engineering, and national trade union representatives
* Lead, develop, and empower a senior leadership team, building succession and capability across Facilities Management while role‑modelling inclusive and values‑led leadership

What this opportunity offers

* Leadership of one of the largest and most diverse FM portfolios in the UK
* Direct accountability through a focused senior leadership team, with scale beneath
* Genuine strategic influence within Royal Mail’s operational and transformation agenda
* The opportunity to modernise and optimise FM delivery at national scale
* Significant scope to shape culture, operating model, and long‑term sustainability outcomes
* A role with profile, responsibility, and visibility at Group leadership level

About you

You will be an experienced, credible senior leader with a strong track record of operating at scale in complex, safety‑critical environments. You are comfortable balancing operational delivery with strategic change and leading large, unionised workforces.

You will bring:

* Extensive senior leadership experience within Facilities Management or a closely aligned operational environment
* Proven accountability for large P&L budgets and delivery of financial, service, and safety performance
* Strong experience across hard and soft FM services, major third‑party contracts, and large property portfolios
* Demonstrable success leading transformation, efficiency programmes, and continuous improvement
* High levels of stakeholder influence, including experience working with senior executives and trade unions
* A commercial, resilient, and people‑centred leadership style
* Strong working knowledge of health & safety, regulatory, and compliance requirements
* A strong growth mindset, with the ability to develop and execute strategies that drive expansion and long‑term value.

Professional membership (e.g. RICS, BIFM/IWFM, CIOB) is desirable, with an MBA or equivalent qualification welcomed.

Why Royal Mail

Royal Mail offers a uniquely complex and nationally significant environment, where leadership decisions have real and immediate impact. This role sits at the intersection of operational continuity, transformation, safety, and sustainability — offering a rare opportunity to lead Facilities Management at true national scale.
