Sports Assistant Fixed Term – September 2026 - August 2027
Actual Salary: £24,200
Working arrangements: Full time, 40 hrs per week (08:30am and 5:00pm, with a 30 minute unpaid break) with flexibility to work beyond 5:00pm to support fixtures.
Working a total of 41 weeks per year (35 term time weeks including INSET days, plus 6 additional weeks to support with holiday club).
The Role
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and confident Sports Assistant keen to support children in their physical education. Under the direction of the Head of PE, Sports & Physical Wellbeing, you will provide support to the Sports and PE Department in the delivery of all aspects of the PE and games curriculum including assisting with lessons; clubs; practices and fixtures for Year 1 to 9 pupils.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about sports and sports coaching, looking to gain relevant experience either prior to, or post completing higher education. The post would be particularly appropriate for a candidate who is contemplating a career in an education setting or as a sports coach.
Person Specification:
Essential:
1. An enthusiasm for sports and sporting activities, with an interest in sports coaching
2. Able to demonstrate a nurturing, encouraging and motivational approach to learning
3. Experience of working with children (even in a voluntary capacity) with a good understanding of the importance of safeguarding
4. Possess excellent communication skills with an ability to establish rapport with pupils, parents and colleagues
5. A flexible and supportive team member
6. In possession of a valid Paediatric First Aid qualification or willingness to obtain via the School
7. Good ICT skills
8. A willingness to support and engage in the whole life of the School
Desirable:
9. Possess a sports / sports coaching related qualification or be working towards one
10. Confident to run PE / Sports lessons under the direction of the Head of PE, Sports & Physical Education (to a pre-planned lesson)
Key Duties:
11. To work under the direction of the Head of PE, Sports & Physical Wellbeing and follow their instruction in relation to assisting with the planning and delivery of games lessons and creating an engaging and positive sports environment.
12. To assist with lunchtime activities and accompany teaching staff on sports–related trips and off-site fixtures, trips and activities.
13. To carry out administrative tasks including updating records and inputting data, photocopying and writing match reports.
14. To check and organise sports equipment and ensures the sports hall and outdoor areas are kept safe and tidy at all times.
15. Ensure the positive behaviour of pupils at all times, promote the good name of the school and act as a role model, setting high expectations in accordance with school policies and procedures.
16. To establish and promote positive productive relationships with pupils and promote the inclusion of all pupils.
17. To support the health, safety and welfare of the pupils in accordance with agreed school policies and procedures including the administration of medicines, providing first aid and supporting personal self-care reporting serious incidents to the School Medical Officer.
18. To support with the Aftercare and Holiday Club provisions as directed and school events when required (the holiday club element will fall during schools at mutually agreed times, fulfilling the 6 weeks element of the role)
