JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary
REPORTS TO: Principal
PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER
Regulations: Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5
1. Exercise of general professional duties
A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as required:
* Under the reasonable direction of the principal of the school
* If employed by a board without a specific school assignment, under the direction of the board and the principal of any school where they work
2. Exercise of particular duties
* Perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the board
3. Teaching responsibilities include:
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons
* Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work
* Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils’ development, progress, and attainment
4. General duties include:
* Promoting the progress and well-being of pupils
* Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters
* Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs
* Communicating with parents and outside bodies
* Participating in meetings related to these duties
5. Assessment/Reporting
Contributing to assessments, reports, and references for pupils, avoiding any conflicts of interest.
6. Staff Development
* Participating in staff development schemes
* Reviewing and improving teaching methods and programmes
* Assisting in the development of courses, materials, and assessment methods
7. Discipline and Health & Safety
* Maintaining order and discipline according to policies
* Safeguarding pupils’ health and safety
* Participating in curriculum and organizational meetings
8. Public Examinations
Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, recording, and supervising during exams
9. Management and Administration
* Contributing to staff recruitment and development
* Managing or coordinating other teachers’ work
* Participating in curriculum, organizational, and pastoral activities
10. Working hours and days
* Available for 195 days/year, with up to 190 days involving teaching
* Work hours and locations specified by the principal or employer
11. Cover duties
Supervising pupils during teacher absences, with conditions depending on school size and teacher role.
