About the Role: As the Head of Legal (Property and Estates) you will provide expert and strategic legal property and general advice to the Board and the executive management team ensuring that the advice covers a broad range of issues and risks which have been assessed and considered from both a legal and strategic perspective. In addition, cross-business actively facilitating and managing team priorities, commitments, progress and road maps, while delivering results, ensuring alignment and agreement by all teams involved. You will lead and ensure efficient and effective management of the Property legal team, facilitating an authentic culture, strong engagement, influence and motivating departmental teams driving strategy and plans, including team structures and resource needs, as well as championing development and high performance. Working closely with the General Counsel and other senior executives and the Board you will ensure effective communication and information flow, that facilitates smooth and predictable decision-making and enables the Company and the Board to deliver to its mandate, championing best practice and change where required In addition, externally, this role will also play a key role in building and nurturing key relationships with partners and customers managing complex negotiations and adversarial situations with professionalism and openness. Key Responsibilities: Establish a strong property legal function which is capable of supporting the strategic growth of the business Develop and define the legal strategy for the property legal area ensuring that the legal team support the business to deliver on its business Plan Support the GC to develop and translate company strategy into a set of OKR’s and legal performance targets. Develop and define the estates and acquisition strategy for the business from a legal perspective Develop a strong relationship with shareholders and other stakeholders to develop reporting templates that ensure shareholders have sufficient visibility and understanding of the commercial function of the business. Structure, lead, develop and motivate the team to ensure that personal and team objectives are met. Provide strategic support to the Chief Executive and Executive Management Team in matters relating to property and estates and the running of the business. Initiate, develop and manage relationships with external law firms to ensure they are appropriate for the advice sought. Lead in budget and cost management and ensure cost effective contracts are in place and OKRs/ SLAs for performance is set and clear Be the trusted advisor of the business and undertake/support critical negotiations with third parties where necessary Advise on disputes and manage high-value litigation and be actively involved in key strategic projects; coordinate the organisation’s response to litigation or any potential legal challenge Knowledge, Skills and Experience: Experience in leading a complex legal function and able to manage change effectively. An experienced lawyer with at least 15 PQE, with excellent commercial property experience acquired both in private practice and/or in-house. Experience of managing a legal function in a fast-moving technical environment dealing with high volume /transactional deals and teams of lawyers Professional qualification to practice English law (e.g. solicitor/Barrister) Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to influence and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, with excellent judgement and analytical skills. Strong commercial acumen with proven ability to think “outside the box” and develop innovative strategic solutions.
