The Specialist Clinical Scientist in Nuclear Medicine is a senior member of a highly specialised service area within the Science & Technology Directorate at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
The role involves supporting all aspects of delivering a clinical nuclear medicine service (both diagnostic and therapeutic) expected in a major acute teaching hospital trust. This includes operational service delivery, staff line management, maintaining the quality management system, supporting research and innovation, and contributing to the strategic development of the service.
The Specialist Clinical Scientist supports the Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics and deputises for them as needed. This is a specialist role, with the freedom to initiate actions within broad scientific principles as directed by the Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics. The post holder leads in two or more specialist areas; possesses advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of Nuclear Medicine Physics; acts as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in their specialist areas; may also serve as a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) and/or Radiation Waste Adviser (RWA); and provides expert scientific support and advice to medical consultants, clinical, scientific, and technical staff on complex issues related to Nuclear Medicine.
Main Duties of the Job
1. Leadership and team management: Support effective collaboration, mentorship, and professional development to meet clinical and organisational goals. Provide line management to clinical scientists and technologists.
2. Provision of a safe and efficient service: Manage operational aspects of two sub-services within Nuclear Medicine (MRT & PET/CT). Support management of various nuclear medicine services and optimise protocols to minimise radiation doses to patients and staff.
3. Quality management: Oversee and support the management of the QMS, and oversee procurement and commissioning of new equipment.
4. Radiation safety and compliance: Interpret and support compliance with national regulations.
5. Research and Innovation: Lead research and innovation projects to enhance service provision.
6. Training and education: Provide education and training to staff and other key stakeholders.
