Overview
We are seeking an outstanding, creative researcher with the skills to develop novel topological photonic crystal/metamaterials for terahertz light control. Our project – sponsored by the Royal Society – is in collaboration with a strong research team in South Korea (led by Dr Teun-Teun Kim) and aims to deliver reconfigurable terahertz topological states for the next generation of wireless communications.
Responsibilities
* Contribute to the development of topological photonic materials for terahertz light control.
* Collaborate within an interdisciplinary research group at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and participate in research dissemination through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Qualifications
* A PhD or equivalent qualification (or nearing completion) in Physics/Optical Engineering or another relevant subject to the study, development and/or application of topological photonic materials.
* Proven practical knowledge and expertise in photonic crystals/metamaterials.
* Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
* A strong track record of research dissemination through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Desirable / Advantageous
* Experience with micro/nanofabrication and materials characterization tools.
* Computational multi-physics/electromagnetics modelling and eigenmode analysis for photonic crystals.
* Terahertz far-field spectra measurements or near-field scanning spectroscopy.
Context and Benefits
The ORC holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award, recognising support for the advancement of women in science. The group includes a diverse community with initiatives such as mentoring schemes, an Early Career Researchers Forum, and the Women in Optics group. Flexible, hybrid, and part-time working arrangements are available. Benefits include a generous holiday allowance, access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), and subsidised health and fitness facilities.
Contract Details
This is a full-time fixed-term position starting 1 November (or as soon as possible thereafter), for an initial 12 months with the possibility of extension to September 2028. Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD; prior to qualification, the title Senior Research Assistant will be used.
