Job overview

We are looking for a Trust Doctor (ST1+ equivalent) to fill a gap in our resident rota. The post-holder will be part of the SHO-level rota and attend their departmental teaching programme sessions, including simulation training. An educational supervisor will be allocated and support will be provided for portfolio development.

Our department has a reputation as a friendly, supportive place to work and we have a track record for getting doctors onto recognised training schemes, e.g. via completion of CREST forms.

The Emergency Department ED at Newham University Hospital (NUH) in East London sees over 90,000 emergency patients every year and an average of 500 patients per day. It is a Trauma Unit with strong links to the Major Trauma Centre at the Royal London Hospital, which is also part of Barts Health. NUH provides all the services expected of a district general hospital including acute medicine, specialist medicine, critical care, child health, women’s health, surgery, long-term care and diagnostics. There is also a dedicated Stroke Unit which specialised in rehabilitation of patients who have usually been cared for initially on the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit HASU at the Royal London Hospital.

Newham is the largest borough within the Trust’s catchment area. The local population is very young and diverse, the case-mix exciting and varied, often with high acuity. There is a separate Paediatric Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Medical qualification from a recognised University or Medical School

Desirable criteria

2. Additional relevant qualifications e.g. ALS, ALERT.
3. The applicant will have practised continuously as a doctor for the last 12 months. If not, evidence of maintaining clinical knowledge and skills must be provided.
4. Additional relevant postgraduate academic qualifications e.g. a degree.

Registration

Essential criteria

5. Full Registration with the General Medical Council

Experience

Essential criteria

6. Completed FY2 or equivalent

Desirable criteria

7. FY1/2 level experience in emergency medicine, paediatrics surgery or orthopaedics.

Skills

Essential criteria

8. Knowledge and skills commensurate with completion of FY2 or equivalent.
9. The applicant must be of good standing and fit to practise medicine safely in accordance with GMC’s Good Medical Practice domains: • Knowledge, skills and performance • Safety and quality • Communication, partnership and teamwork • Maintaining trust

Desirable criteria

10. Clinical employment in the NHS.
11. Clinical experience in any public health service.
12. Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
13. Knowledge and experience of UK health systems, practices and values and awareness of current issues in the NHS.
14. Computer literate.
15. Understands the importance and impact of information systems in health care.
16. Participation in clinical audit.
17. Experience of working in teams.
18. ALS provider.

Language and communication skills

Essential criteria

19. The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice .
20. Primary medical qualification undertaken solely in English including all examinations undertaken solely in English and that the primary medical qualification included at least 75% of contact with patients in English.
21. A valid IELTS certificate with a minimum score of 7.5 in each domain (speaking, listening, reading and writing). IELTS certificate must be dated no more than two years prior to the start of the programme and the above scores must be achieved in one sitting.
22. Evidence of completion of OET with a minimum score of 400 in each domain (listening, reading, writing and speaking). OET Statement of Results must be dated no more than two years prior to the start of the programme and the above scores must be achieved in one sitting.
23. A minimum of 3 months paid employment as a doctor in the NHS
