Job Overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology. The Cardiff Eye Unit based at University Hospital of Wales, Children’s Hospital for Wales, and University Hospital Llandough provides a comprehensive ophthalmic service for Cardiff and Vale and surrounding areas. The department also contracts with purchasing authorities in most other parts of South Wales. Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services. Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements. Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview. You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £110,240 per annum to £160,951 per annum. Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.


Main duties of the job

The appointee will join an established team of 17 Consultant Surgeons providing a comprehensive and high quality patient care service across all ophthalmology practice. Cardiff and Vale UHB is committed to expanding the Consultant cover in the Ophthalmology service in the near future. There are excellent training and career development opportunities in the department. Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine will be expected.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

* On GMC Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT due within 6 months of interview date (note that Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application)
* FRCOphth or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria

* Broad training and experience in Ophthalmology
* Specialist training, research, audit, service development activities and experience in Paediatric Ophthalmology
* Completion of at least one year's Paediatric Ophthalmology fellowship training

Desirable criteria

* Experience with virtual working and EPR

Skills

Essential criteria

* Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
* Effective and demonstrable communication skills

Clinical Governance

Essential Criteria

* Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role or audit in improving medical practice
* Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent)

Desirable criteria

* Audit projects presented at national meetings or published

Research

Essential Criteria

* Ability to critically appraise research

Desirable criteria

* Evidence of active research interests

Teaching

Essential Criteria

* Evidence of teaching medical students and resident doctors

Desirable criteria

* Experience in developing allied health practitioners e.g. nurse injectors, cataract nurses, optometrists with higher medical certificate

Management

Essential Criteria

* Evidence of effective leadership skills
