To work as a member of the maternity team, under the direction and supervision of the midwife. The maternity care assistant is accountable to the midwife and will be supervised by the midwife either directly or indirectly whilst on duty.
* Promote a friendly, caring environment and actively work within the multidisciplinary team.
* Promote the philosophy of respect for varied cultural, physical and spiritual needs of mothers.
* Act as a role model for practice, respecting both the privacy and dignity of mothers and their families.
* Prepare rooms and ensure the environment is welcoming.
* Assist mothers with baby care, including nappy changing, bathing and feeding.
* Assist mothers with personal hygiene needs, including bathing and bed-making.
* Be able to recognise deviations from normal in the condition of both mother and baby and report findings to the midwife in charge.
* Develop and maintain positive relationships, respecting the woman's and her family's wishes with kindness, compassion and empathy.
* Recognise the Maternity Care Assistants scope of practice within national frameworks, demonstrate NHS Constitution values, and seek guidance when unsure to ensure safe, competent care.
* Understand main principles of team working and be able to define their own role and that of others.
The shift pattern will be working day and night shifts, Monday to Sunday including bank holidays. You will work under the direct/indirect supervision of a registered midwife when undertaking delegated nursing and non-nursing duties for women and their families.
Ideally the applicant has experience within the NHS and holds a BTEC Level 3 or equivalent, or is willing to work towards this.
