We’re working with a respected, independent consultancy known for its forward-thinking work across the green energy sector. They are now looking for a Principal Ecologist / Ornithologist to join their team in Glasgow.This is a fantastic opportunity to play a senior role in the delivery of environmental and ecological support across complex infrastructure and renewable developments. You’ll join a dynamic and collaborative team working at the forefront of the UK’s net zero ambitions.The RoleYou’ll lead on ecological and ornithological inputs across the full project lifecycle- from feasibility and planning through to post-construction monitoring. You’ll also guide survey design, manage reporting, support business development, and mentor more junior team members.You’ll be part of the Consenting & Environment Team, helping shape best practice, influence strategic decisions, and build strong relationships with clients, regulators, and stakeholders.Key ResponsibilitiesLead ecological and ornithological assessments, including survey design, data interpretation, and impact analysis.Produce and review high-quality deliverables (EIA chapters, HRAs, licence applications, monitoring plans, etc.).Manage multiple projects, overseeing timelines, budgets, and survey logistics.Mentor and train junior team members, fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing.Keep up to date with relevant legislation, guidance, and industry trends.Contribute to bids, proposals, and business development activities.Represent the business at key industry events and forums.What You’ll BringDegree in Ecology, Zoology, Environmental Science, or a related subject—or equivalent experience.Strong technical expertise in ornithology and/or terrestrial ecology.Deep knowledge of UK planning and permitting systems, including EIA, HRA, and the Habitat Regulations.Experience in renewables (onshore preferred), biodiversity net gain (BNG), and DCO projects.Confident project manager with strong organisational and communication skills.Professional membership (e.g. CIEEM, IEMA) is desirable.A proactive, strategic mindset with an eye for innovation and improvement.A strong network in the renewables and/or environmental consultancy space is an advantage.What’s On OfferSalary: £65,000 – £75,000, depending on experienceHybrid working: 3 days in the office (site/survey work counts toward this)Private healthcare (BUPA) from day oneLife assurance and income protection from day one8% employer pension contribution24 days’ holiday + 10 bank holidays (with purchase options after 1 year, and increasing annual entitlement)Green car scheme via salary sacrifice after 1 year’s serviceA wide variety of impactful renewable and infrastructure projectsA supportive, flexible work environment with clear career progression pathwaysOpportunities to contribute to strategic growth and innovationIf you’re looking to take the next step in your ecological career—working on meaningful projects with a company that genuinely supports its people—this could be the perfect role for you.Apply now or get in touch for a confidential chat.
