The role
The companies desk is looking for an assistant companies news editor to help lead the FT’s business coverage, with particular focus on the energy and natural resources sectors. This role will involve overseeing core FT stories relevant to the energy disruption affecting companies, markets, and economies.
Key reporting topics include the business impact of conflicts, energy transition dynamics, supply of rare earths, grid bottlenecks, and mergers and acquisitions.
Key responsibilities
* Commission eye‑catching stories and plan coverage.
* Serve as an accomplished copy editor, polishing news and longer pieces.
* Develop close working relationships with reporters in London and overseas to manage workflow and chase news.
* Ensure story text is compelling and incorporate data and visual elements standardly.
* Conceive, plan, and commission special projects, series, investigations, and data‑ or visual‑led storytelling.
* Coordinate coverage and commission across sectors, liaising with London desks and overseas teams.
* Deputise for colleagues on other sectors and support overall companies coverage.
* Work regular Sunday shifts as part of the desk rota.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have:
* Experience as an editor or corporate reporter with a focus on natural resources and energy.
* Global experience and the ability to deliver scoops, high‑impact analysis, visual, and data pieces.
* Experience in commissioning and producing series, investigations, and other special projects.
* Strong copy editing skills and a keen eye for compelling narratives.
* Knowledge of the energy transition, rare earths supply, grid infrastructure, and M&A activity in mining.
