Tree Team Support Officer

Tree Team Support Officer - (Career Grade post)

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Tree Team at Basingstoke and Deane Council.

Trees and woodlands are a key feature of the borough, with an evolving urban forest, surrounded by beautiful Hampshire villages and the North Wessex Downs Area National Landscape. We place great value on our large, diverse, and interesting tree resource on both public and private land, which makes our borough a great place to live and work.

The sound management of the borough’s trees is a priority for the council, due to the benefits they provide for people and wildlife and also the contribution they make to our key priorities, such as the Climate Change Strategy.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join the Natural Environment Team which includes trees and woodlands, ecology and biodiversity, landscape architecture and open space. You will be supporting the Tree Team in delivering its statutory duties and council priorities in respect of council owned trees and private trees protected under the Town & Country Planning Act across the borough.

An interest in trees or the natural environment is desirable, however a proven track record in a supporting role is essential for the post.

It is a career graded post, that will help provide a framework for career development based on the level of existing experience that the successful candidate can bring. The acquisition of competence and skills in the post will form the basis of criteria for progression to higher levels of the career grade.

The successful candidate will be involved in a range of tasks including;

1. Acting as the first point of contact for the Tree Team, responding to enquiries relating to both council owned and protected trees.
2. Providing advice and signposting in relation to general tree information such as whether a tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order.
3. Liaising with other council colleagues, members of the public, parish councils and ward members in relation to allocated tree matters.
4. Managing, maintaining and integrating the council’s tree databases, and associated document management systems (training will be provided).
5. Processing requests to carry out works to council trees, and collating and coordinating the Tree Team workload.

Ideally, you will have experience of working in a similar environment, combined with excellent communication and team working skills. An ability to learn and adapt quickly to work demands and to develop and record procedures is important.

This position would best suit someone who wants to use their knowledge and develop their skills to make a difference and be part of a motivated and professional natural environment team. You will be expected to work independently as well as working in a team environment, be that in the office or working from home.

Salary – This will be dependent on the level of experience of the successful candidate but will be between £31,204-£32,347 (Grade C) and £34,367 - £36,980 (Grade E)

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Jan Polnik, Principal Tree Officer, on (01256) 845174 or by email at.
