Do you want to work in one of the most breathtaking and ecologically diverse landscapes in the UK? Highland Council is seeking a dedicated Tree Survey Inspector to help manage and protect the roadside trees that line our vast and varied road network across the Scottish Highlands.
Location: Based in HQ, Inverness, with travel across Highland
Full-time: 35 hours/ week
Fixed Term: 23 months
Salary: £27,554 – £33,579 (dependent on qualifications/ experience)
This is more than a desk job. You’ll be out in the field, often in remote, rugged and beautiful locations, surveying trees that line hundreds of miles of Highland roads. From urban roads to coastal routes and glens, your work will help ensure public safety while supporting biodiversity and sustainable land management.
You’ll work closely with the Council’s Senior Arboricultural Officer, applying your expertise to assess tree health, manage risk, and contribute to long-term planning for tree management across the region.
Key Responsibilities
* Survey and assess roadside trees, especially ash and elm, for health and safety risks.
* Use ArcGIS and asset management systems to map and record findings.
* Liaise with landowners, contractors, and internal teams to coordinate tree works.
* Support responses to tree health threats like ash dieback and Dutch elm disease.
* Contribute to the development of a Highland wide tree management strategy.
* HNC/HND/Degree in Arboriculture or a related field.
* Professional Tree Inspection certification (or willingness to obtain).
* Strong tree identification and survey skills in all seasons.
* Proficiency in GIS and data management tools.
* A valid driving licence and willingness to travel extensively across the Highlands, including overnight stays.

* Enjoy flexible working with a base at Council HQ, Inverness (minimum 2 office days per week, unless out in the field).
