We are recruiting an Automation Maintenance Technician (Pool) at our Plymouth Mail Centre, Plymstock, PL9 7XX site. Royal Mail is undergoing significant technological change, transitioning to a mechanised parcel sortation process. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a major investment in new parcel processing technology and engineering. Salary: £51,051 per annum, plus night shift allowance. Benefits include 22.5 days annual leave, bank holidays, a defined contribution pension scheme, and weekend shift allowances (£51 per Saturday, £102 per Sunday shift). A welcome bonus of £1,500 may be available (subject to terms and conditions).
The successful candidate will work on a shift rotation system at Plymouth Mail Centre, with some flexibility to meet operational needs, including voluntary overtime and occasional shift pattern changes. The role involves a 40-hour full-time schedule, covering Eariles: 06:45 – 15:15, Lates: 14:45 – 23:15, and Nights: 22:45 – 07:15, with potential adjustments.
This is a Pool position requiring adaptability, stepping in for other technicians during leave or sick leave. Outside these periods, the standard shift is 07:00 to 15:30, Monday to Friday, with initial placement on the early shift and scheduled variation for broader experience.
The Role
Your responsibilities include:
* Performing preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance tasks
* Engaging in continuous improvement activities
* Supporting the Engineering Manager and team through reports, fault logging, and data entry
* Diagnosing automation breakdowns and prioritising corrective actions
* Monitoring equipment performance and collaborating with operational stakeholders to enhance automation outputs
* Leading continuous improvement projects from conception to implementation
* Working independently and as part of a team to achieve goals
About You
You should be a qualified multi-skilled engineer in electrical and mechanical engineering (minimum ONC Electrical Engineering / NVQ Level 3 or equivalent). You must understand health and safety legislation, have experience maintaining automation equipment, and possess strong communication skills. A full UK driving license is required for occasional site travel.
